Its more than 22,000 animal and plant species place Slovenia among the areas with the richest biodiversity in Europe.

With about 60% of forest cover, Slovenia is the third-most forested country in Europe.

Slovenian forests are still home to three large carnivores: the bear, the lynx and the wolf. The current bear population includes about 560 bears.

As much as 37% of Slovenia's territory is included in the Natura 2000 network.

Slovenia has Triglav National Park, three regional parks and 46 landscape parks.

Altogether, Slovenia has approximately 28,000 kilometres of waterways and 300 lakes.

Slovenia prides itself on its comprehensive supply of excellent drinking water.

The Pragozd Krokar and the Snežnik-Ždrolce nature reserves are inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List as part of the Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.

Lake Cerknica – home to 270 bird species

In the Notranjska Regional Park lies the intermittent Cerknica Lake, one of the world's most unique natural phenomena. The incredibly well preserved habitat attracts as many as 270 bird species, which amounts to three-fourths of all species living in Slovenia. In addition, 100 of those species nest there.
