In the picturesque surroundings of Piran and Koper, an international summer chamber music festival takes place In August and September, which is dedicated to Giuseppe Tartini, who was born in Piran. In addition to Tartini's works, the festival also features the works of other great international and Slovenian composers as well as the works of modern creators inspired by Tartini’s art. At the festival, you will have the opportunity to see Tartini's famous 300-year-old violin and hear how it sounds. This violin continues to amaze audiences as they listen to it played by world-class musicians.
As you take a walk through Koper, you will be amazed at its attractive cultural and historical heritage, and its surrounding area will take your breath away due to the wealth of flavours that can be encountered at numerous gastronomy festivals. If you have a sweet tooth, visit the town in September, when the streets are filled with the aroma of sweet Istrian delicacies. The Sweet Istria Festival also reveals its “sweet delights” at a number of accompanying events and workshops.
In the beginning of September, the Vilenica International Literary Festival will host poets, authors, playwrights and essayists from more than 20 countries for the 38th time. The main event of the festival will be an award ceremony for giving out the Vilenica literary award, which is given in accordance with the Vilenica statutes to an author from central Europe for exceptional achievements in the field of literature and essay writing. The festival programme will be held in the Karst and elsewhere in Slovenia, but the most unique venue will most certainly be the karst Vilenica Cave.
If you ask a Karst local what they are most proud of, they will most likely point to their prosciutto and teran wine. The Karst prosciutto, cured in a wood stove, is a perfect match for the carmine-red teran wine, which is given its strong character by the Karst soil, terra rossa. These two Karst specialities come together perfectly at the festival, which you can experience in August in Dutovlje.
Where could you find a more picture perfect location for poetic and artistic souls if not in the idyllic Brda Hills! Small Brda villages overlooking the hills covered with vineyards, orchards and olive groves are ideal for inspiration and romance. Brda has always been an inspiration for poets, as the poet Alojz Gradnik was also born here. And it’s his birthplace of Medana, which annually hosts the Dreams Festival, where it’s possible to listen to exquisite music and poetry from various domestic and international artists on dreamy summer evenings. The Fairy-Tale Festival in Šmartno will take you to a fantasy world.
