Less Plastic, More Sustainability

Now is the time. LESS plastic, MORE sustainability!

Nature and the desire to preserve it for our descendants is the foundation of Slovenian tourism. Waste is part of everyday life, and its volume increases with tourist visits. Not all plastic, but particularly single-use plastic, is disputable. The Covid-19 pandemic has further stimulated the use of single-use plastic, so now is the time to gradually eliminate it from Slovenian tourism.

Let's eliminate the four most problematic items

The pollution of the Earth with plastic products, especially single-use ones, has reached a critical level, which is why measures need to be taken to limit the damage done to the planet with the use of this resource. A change in the mindset of providers as well as of consumers is needed, where Slovenian tourism providers and destinations, as ambassadors of sustainability, play a major role. We want to relieve Slovenia of the burden of single-use plastic by eliminating the most problematic and unnecessary packaging and single-use items as well as by following the Global Tourism Plastic Initiative principles.

Every provider that does not currently use the listed four single-use plastic items in its business and follows the six principles listed below, and every provider that will eliminate the listed four single-use plastic items from its business by the end of 2022 and follow the six principles of the Global Tourism Plastic Initiative. All destinations are also invited to coordinate with the providers to exclude the listed four plastic items, including at events at the destination, from their business. The goal is not the number of signatories, but rather consistency in the elimination of single-use plastic from business. Every signatory undertakes not to offer the listed single-use plastic articles as of 1 January 2023. The ambassador and the first signatory of the initiative is chef Luka Košir, a recipient of a Michelin star and the green Michelin star in 2021.

By acting in accordance with the Global Tourism Plastic Initiative principles and in the given order. In accordance with the Commitment to Eliminate Single-use Plastic from Slovenian Tourism, a provider or destination strives to use packaging that can be reused, recycled or composted instead of single-use plastic. It looks for alternatives and possibilities for refilling of packaging and encourages suppliers, partners and guests to use more sustainable solutions.

Commitment to Eliminate Single-use Plastic from Slovenian Tourism

We are committed to eliminating the following single-use plastic items from our business by the end of 2022:

We will act in accordance with the Global Tourism Plastic Initiative principles and in the given order:

  • Eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging and items;
  • Take action to move from single-use to reuse models or reusable alternatives;
  • (Engage the value chain to) move towards 100% of plastic packaging to be reusable, recyclable, or compostable;
  • Take action to increase the amount of recycled content across all plastic packaging and items used;
  • Collaborate and invest to increase the recycling and composting rates for plastics; and
  • Report on the progress in attaining the goals regarding the four key items for the elimination of single-use plastic from Slovenian tourism.

The "LESS plastic, MORE sustainability" commitment to eliminate single-use plastic has been signed by more than 100 stakeholders in Slovenian tourism: hotel operators, health resorts and providers of other types of accommodation, restaurants, inns, destination organisations, glamping resorts, travel agencies, tourist attractions, event organisers, etc.
