Tourist traffic has almost reached the level of 2019 in terms of the number of overnight stays

From January to July, 3.2 million tourist arrivals and more than 8.6 million tourist overnight stays in Slovenia were recorded. This is 145% more arrivals and 119% more overnight stays than in the same period last year.

Tourist traffic has almost reached the level of 2019 in terms of the number of overnight stays

Compared to the same period of the last pre-coronavirus year (2019), figures show that only 5% fewer arrivals and 1.7% fewer overnight stays were recorded. Foreign guests generated 2 million arrivals (237% more) and 5.1 million (220% more) overnight stays than in the same period in 2021. In the first half of the year, we recorded 1.11 billion euros from travel exports.

The ratio between overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests in the first seven months was 40:60 in favour of foreign guests (in the same period in 2019, this ratio was 22:78 in favour of foreign guests).

On this occasion, MSc. Maja Pak, Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board, commented the results of the first seven months: "The growth of arrivals and overnight stays in Slovenian tourism in the first months is good, and the results so far predict a year that will come close to the pre-coronavirus year 2019 in terms of tourist traffic. In terms of arrivals in the first seven months, we are only lagging behind by another 5 percent compared to 2019, and for overnight stays by less than 2 percent. Inflows from travel exports are 10% lower. The largest number of overnight stays by foreign tourists is created by the traditionally important markets of Slovenian tourism and nearby countries, where we have particularly strengthened marketing and promotional activities, i.e. Germany, Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic and Hungary," and continued by highlighting further STB's activities in the light of uncertain and changing conditions: "At the Slovenian Tourist Board, we will continue to promote Slovenia as a boutique destination committed to sustainability for five-star experiences, with a special emphasis on active experiences in nature and sports tourism. The period ahead brings uncertainty and many changes to Slovenian tourism. The tourism industry is facing many challenges, but above all rising prices, decreasing purchasing power of households, disruptions in supply chains, uncertainty caused by the war in Ukraine, and above all, a severe shortage of personnel. All this affects the otherwise good forecasts of the travel intentions of European residents in the coming months and introduces instability into the operations of tourism companies. This year's tourism panel within the framework of the Bled Strategic Forum, which will take place next week, is also addressing these challenges."

The largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists were created by guests from Germany

Among foreign tourists, tourists from Germany generated the most overnight stays (16.5% of all foreign tourists' overnight stays), followed by tourists from Austria (8.9%), Italy (7.0%), the Czech Republic ( 6.4%) and Hungary (6.0%).

Domestic guests are still in first place in terms of arrivals and overnight stays

Domestic guests generated 1.2 million arrivals, or 70% more than in the same period in 2021, and almost 3.5 million overnight stays, or 49% more than in the seven months of the previous year. Compared to the same period in 2019, we recorded a 43% increase in tourist arrivals of domestic guests and a 37% increase in their overnight stays.

Most overnight stays in mountain municipalities

In the first seven months of 2022, most tourist overnight stays were created in accommodation facilities in mountain municipalities (32% of all overnight stays), followed by spa municipalities (20%) and coastal municipalities (20%). Compared the same period in 2021, more tourist overnight stays were recorded in all types of tourist municipalities: 136% more in mountain municipalities, 64% more in seaside municipalities, 103% in spa resorts, 306% in Ljubljana, 180% in urban municipalities and in a group of others municipalities for 104% more tourist overnight stays.

In the first seven months of 2022, domestic and foreign tourists created the most overnight stays in hotels (49.5% of all overnight stays and 145% more than in the same period in 2021), followed by other accommodation facilities and then campsites.
