The 2008 Ljubljana Festival

The traditional international summer Ljubljana Festival starting each year in early July, will start this year as early as 19 June due to the EU presidency. The opening will feature the following performances: the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra with Sir Andrew Davis, the Milan La Scala Orchestra with Myung-Whun Chung, the French National Orchestra with Kurt Masur, two performances by the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra from St. Petersburg with Valeri Georgiev and finally a performance by the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra with Zubin Mehta. Special attention will be paid to music and visual events, such as the first-rate production of Poulenc’s opera Dialogues of the Carmelites by a group from Zagreb, the production of J. Cranko’s ballet Onyegin by the Bavarian National Ballet in cooperation with the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Maribor Opera house will prepare Bizet’s Carmen and Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte. In the first half of 2008, Ljubljana will also be hosting numerous other cultural, economic and promotional events planned separately from the EU presidency, which will enrich a visit to Ljubljana even more.
