Developing Countries Lead World Tourism Growth

International tourist arrivals in 2007 were up by more than 6 percent due to strong global economic growth.

International tourist arrivals in 2007 were up by more than 6 percent due to strong global economic growth. The number of tourist arrivals in developing countries is up by 8 percent. Over the 2000–2007 period, the market share of developing countries has increased to 40% of all international arrivals across the globe. The number of international tourist arrivals on a global scale has risen to 898 million in 2007, which corresponds to an annual growth rate of 4 percent. Developing countries recorded 360 million international tourist arrivals in 2007, achieving an annual growth rate of 6 percent. Authorities are well aware of tourism-driven opportunities for social and economic development and creation of new employment opportunities. According to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the upward trend in tourist arrivals is expected to continue in 2008.
