Conference on “ACTIVITIES FOR SUSTAINABLE EUROPEAN TOURISM”

Slovenia's priority for tourism in the context of Slovenian EU Council Presidency is to continue to work on the EU tourism policy implementation process—the stronger partnership for European tourism aims to make the sector more competitive, create new and better jobs, promote sustainable development of the tourism industry and improve competitiveness of Europe as a tourist destination on the global tourism market.

Slovenia is particularly focused on the implementation of policies from the Agenda for a sustainable and competitive European tourism, adopted at the Council of Ministers under the Portuguese presidency in autumn 2007.

To present the proposed action plan and activities for sustainable European tourism to the general and professional public, the Ministry of the Economy is holding a conference on “Activities for Sustainable European Tourism” in Lipica, Hotel Maestoso, Tuesday 15 April 2008, at 9:30.

The conference is aimed at active players involved in the planning of the development of tourist activities in a company, institute, municipality, the local environment or wider area.

Speakers from Slovenia and Austria and a representative of the World Tourism Organization will be presenting the activities that EU guidelines recommend to secure sustainable development of tourism. A number of speakers will be presenting examples of good practice; Tourism Sustainability Group member, Dr. Tanja Mihalič, working for the European Commission and co-author of the “Activities for More Sustainable European Tourism,” will provide a comprehensive insight into the document, and the questions & answers session will address the challenges and possibilities for sustainable development of tourism in Slovenia and the EU.
