GOTHICmed: Example of Good Practice in the Culture 2000 Programme

The Culture 2000 programme selected an example of good practice from among 1,500 projects: the title went to the GOTHICmed project, whose results will be officially unveiled at the valorisation conference in Brussels.

The GOTHICmed project—a Virtual Museum of Mediterranean Gothic Architecture which underscores the importance of shared knowledge and cultural heritage dating from the Gothic era. The aim of the completed three-year project, whose Slovenian co-organiser was the International Tourism Institute, was to provide individuals with an insight into Gothic architecture in the Mediterranean region, to bring together experts from this field, and raise awareness of this important era in architectural history.
The project included an online Virtual Museum of Mediterranean Gothic Architecture, with 3D photography, texts, plans and other information. On top of that, an international exhibition travelled the Mediterranean helping to establish new ties with EU member states and other countries. The project put considerable emphasis on buildings that are less accessible and less known to the general public and those that have lost to the ravages of time, either in part or completely. The travelling exhibition—also hosted by Ljubljana in July and August 2007—was not only a presentation of results, the virtual museum, models of Gothic monuments and comprehensive promotional material but also a significant contribution to the creation of an interdisciplinary expert network.
In the context of the International »Re-network« Conference on networking and promotion of free information exchange and transnational cooperation in culture, a delegation of high officials of the European Commission for Culture and Executive Agency of the Culture Programme visited Šentrupert in the Dolenjska region on Thursday, 12 June 2008. The town played an important role in the GOTHICmed project: Its Gothic church of St Rupert was featured in the virtual museum, and the church's model was included in the international travelling exhibition.
