Slovenian tourism economy registered 4% more tourists and 3% more overnight stays in the first six months of 2008 over the same period in 2007. Tourist accommodation facilities registered a 2% drop in tourist arrivals and overnight stays in June 2008 compared to June 2007.

According to provisional statistics of the Statistical Office of the Republic of Slovenia, the total number of arrivals in the first six months of 2008 increased by 4% (1,201,993 arrivals in total) year over year, with a 3% and 6% increase in the number of foreign and domestic visitors respectively. The total number of overnight stays compared to the same period last year is up by 3% (currently at 3,535,791 overnight stays), with foreign tourists accounting for a 1% increase, and domestic for 5%.
The leading country in the number of tourist arrivals is again Italy, followed by Austria, Germany, Croatia and the UK.
A significant, two-figure increase in the number of tourists has been recorded on the markets where this year the Slovenian Tourist Board (STB) ran several marketing and communication campaigns to promote Slovenian tourism offer. Tourists from the Scandinavian countries are on the rise: the number of Swedish and Finnish tourists visiting Slovenia in the first six months of 2008 rose by 25% and 17% respectively. In the first six months of 2008 over the same period in 2007, the number of tourists from Luxembourg increased by 169%, The Netherlands 12%, Belgium 26%, Denmark 53%. The number of tourist arrivals from Eastern European countries is rising too: for instance, Russia accounted for a 28% increase, Poland 44%, the Czech Republic 16%. The number of tourists from Serbia increased by 13% in the first six-month period. A positive growth trend continues on the Spanish (number of tourists up by 9%) and Greek (up by 17%) outgoing markets. Overseas countries are increasingly gaining ground as outgoing markets for Slovenian tourism, which is underpinned by the rising number of Japanese tourist arrivals (a 75% increase), also thanks to the strengthening of activities for the promotion of Slovenia and Slovenian tourism on the Japanese market.
The growing trend in the number of tourists in Slovenia coincides with the overall positive trend at the level of global tourist flows. According to UNWTO, the number of tourist arrivals in the first four months of 2008 increased by 5% on a global scale year over year, which indicates a relative stability of international tourism.
