New Ways to Develop Cultural Tourism

The municipality of Maribor (MOM) was the only Slovenian municipality to participate in the European Week of Regions and Cities – Open Days event, which was held in Brussels last week.

The Slovenian participants in the Brussels event – Mr Franc Kangler, Mayor of Maribor; Mr Andrej Beloglavec, Deputy Head of the European Commission Representation Office in Slovenia; Ms Brigita Pavlič, Head of the Maribor Festival; and Ms Majda Solkan, Head of Development with the Maribor Tourist Board – presented their experience with the European capital at the Old Vine House in the context of the Europe in Our Region (Evropa v naši regiji) event, which was held on Wednesday 15 October.
In Brussels, where they also attended a workshop on innovative tourism, the municipality of Maribor presented two projects: Via Urbium, run by the Maribor Tourist Board, and the Maribor Festival, run by Narodni Dom. The Via Urbium project is a joint management scheme that brings together three cities, one in Slovenia, Hungary and Croatia. The cities of Maribor, Sombotel and Varaždin established close cooperation to promote their old town centres and to develop cultural tourism. In 2008, the year of intercultural dialogue, cultural tourism was at the heart of the Maribor Festival, which attracted more than 200 authors and designers from different cultural backgrounds.
