Slovenia as the European Caravanning Giant

The Slovenian motor home and caravan market is registering record growth also in 2008, while Europe faces a decline in sales.

The sales crisis was felt in Slovenia too, but it only slightly decreased the second quarter growth rate, which nevertheless stood at 20% for motor homes (stagnation in Europe) and 24% for caravans (Europe recording a 13-percent drop).
There are currently 2,950 motor homes registered in Slovenia. Given the current growth trend, there will have been some 3,000 by the end of the year. The market potential is 7,000+ motor homes in the next five to seven years. There is no statistical data on caravans available in Slovenia because in the past most caravans were permanently located in campsites around Croatia.
Each owner of a new recreational vehicle also buys additional equipment in the average amount of EUR 5,000 per vehicle. Over the next six years the Slovenian market for recreational vehicles and equipment will be worth around 185 million euros. Seventy percent of all motor home owners stay in campsites. One-third of the entire Slovenian population spends their holidays camping, notably in caravans, tents and mobile homes, which is gaining in popularity. Motor home travellers too spend nearly three-quarters of overnight stays in campsites. Apart from Croatia and Slovenia, the most popular caravanning destinations among Slovenians are Italy, France, Austria, Germany, Greece and Scandinavia.
