Slovenia played host to the 23rd annual ETC Marketing Intelligence Group meeting (European Travel Commission, ETC) between 11–14 February 2009 in the capital, Ljubljana. The keynote of this year's meeting was Tourism intelligence in times of crisis. The meeting registered a record turnout: 42 representatives of national tourism and travel organisations and of various intelligence organisations from 21 countries.

The principal mission of the European Travel Commission is to market the tourism of the whole of Europe and its individual countries.
The Market Intelligence Group (MIG) is made up of directors of research departments from 39 national tourism and travel organisations across Europe. They represent an active forum for the development and exchange of knowledge of tourism markets and for the promotion of new research that will benefit the whole of Europe. Working closely with the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), European Cities Marketing (ECM), Tourism Sector of the European Commission, and private businesses, the MIG members represent a dependable platform for effective research.
In the course of three days, the participants looked at potential impacts of the economic crisis on tourism and discussed the European Travel Commission's programme for 2009 and 2010 and the intelligence programme of the World Tourism Organization for 2010. Also presented were best practices in the spheres of research and marketing.
The meeting was addressed by Mr Marjan Hribar, MSc, Director-General of the Directorate for Tourism at the Ministry of the Economy, and Mr Dimitrij Piciga, MSc, Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board and vice-president of the European Travel Commission.
