Theme Trails – Opportunity for Development of Sustainable Tourism

The purpose of the conference on theme trails as opportunities for the development of sustainable tourism was to give a comprehensive presentation of regional theme trails, as well as to discuss the current topics concerning competitive and quality tourism development.
 
The official conference schedule was wonderfully complemented by an interesting programme of side events, giving the participants a chance to check out the theme trails first-hand.
The regional HERITAGE TRAILS NET project combines hiking and bicycle trails, bridle ways and waterways running across 19 municipalities of southeastern Slovenia (the leading being the municipality of Trebnje), in the total length of 1,395km. The network incorporates 100+ cultural and natural heritage sites and 200+ tourism service providers.
The regional theme trails come with a number of advanced IT solutions: a web-based portal, WEB GIS theme trail viewer, mobile and PDA interfaces, CMS system for theme trail maintenance.
The project is part-financed by the European Union, specifically the European Regional Development Fund.
