Economic crisis reflected in Slovenian tourism statistics

According to provisional figures from SURS, in May this year tourist accommodation establishments recorded a 16% fall in tourist arrivals and overnight stays compared to the same period last year.

The number of foreign visitors was down by 20% and overnight stays by foreign visitors by 21%. There were 8% fewer domestic visitors, generating 7% fewer overnight stays. The consequences of the global financial crisis, which affects demand from domestic visitors and, in particular, from foreign visitors, are thus reflected in statistical data relating to Slovenian tourism in May or in the first five months of this year. The downwards trend in the number of foreign visitors continues, particularly in the case of visitors from Slovenia's traditional incoming markets, which have been badly affected by the financial crisis: Germany, Austria, Croatia, the United Kingdom and Benelux. In May Slovenia received 17% fewer visitors from Austria, 30% fewer visitors from Germany and 32% fewer visitors from Croatia than in May last year. There were also 16% fewer visitors from the Netherlands, 29% fewer from Belgium and 12% fewer from Luxembourg. The fall in the number of Italian visitors (down by 2%) was significantly smaller than in the case of other traditionally important markets.
A positive growth in visitor numbers is only recorded from a few markets, e.g. overseas markets. The number of tourists from Japan grew by 28% in May (overnight stays generated by Japanese tourists were up by 21%), while the number of visitors from Russia was up by 1% (with 8% fewer overnight stays generated than in May last year).
