Gault&Millau Slovenia announces the best for 2023

Small in size, but big when it comes to gastronomy – that's Slovenia, says Gault&Millau Slovenia. Its 2023 Best of the Best selection includes a number of new gastronomic names that impress with their unique culinary vision, as well as many well-established names and restaurants that have consistently maintained the quality and excellence of their creations and have been thus awarded four toques. All of the recipients were greeted with enthusiastic applause at tonight's awards ceremony, when Gault&Millau Slovenia also announced the arrival of the new guide for 2023, featuring 180 restaurants, over 100 POP places, 93 wine cellars with 278 evaluated wine samples and 25 Slovenian tourist farms.

Gault&Millau Slovenia has awarded seven special prizes to eight creators, including two chefs of tradition who have impressed with their respect and nurturing of Slovenian culinary tradition.

The fact that Gault&Millau Slovenia has awarded two chefs with the Chef of Tradition title is not the only novelty of this year. Although Gault&Millau introduces a new feature practically every year, this year's selection of winners is a new lease of life for Slovenian gastronomy.

Matej Tomažič and Ivica Evačić both come from the Karst & Mediterranean region and have an important mission; preserving the rich culinary heritage of the region, the close link with local agriculture and foodstuffs and also the close link with the local community. "Slovenia is already so closely linked to its traditions, but when two individuals are so enthusiastic about their love of tradition, it's not a case of choosing between them, but of rewarding them both," explained Mira Šemić, Director of Gault&Millau Slovenia.

"This year's winners, as well as the publication of the guide, are a clear reflection of the fact that every year, Gault&Millau inspectors 'comb' Slovenia and discover several novelties," said Mira Šemić. "We are proud of all Slovenian restaurateurs, waiters and sommeliers who maintain the quality and excellence of their restaurants year after year, but we are also impressed by the new names that are just making their way into the gastronomy scene. At Gault&Millau Slovenia, we are convinced that an important part of our mission is to identify these upcoming stars and highlight them, as they have a lot to offer," commented Šemić and added that since the Gault&Millau Guide had been introduced to the Slovenian market, steady growth in the Slovenian culinary offer has been marked. Young people in smaller towns and cities are developing their love for Slovenian gastronomy and its traditions in their own unique way, with fresh approaches, but usually tied to the strong roots of Slovenian cuisine.

The same as in previous years, the main partner of the Gault&Millau Slovenia Gastronomic Guide is the Slovenian Tourist Board. MSc. Maja Pak, Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board, commented: “At the Slovenian Tourist Board, we are proud that Slovenia, despite its pocket size, has achieved the status of a gastronomic superpower on the global tourism map, also with the help of renowned guides such as Gault&Millau. At this year's edition of Gault&Millau, we invite foodies from all over the world to discover the Slovenia Green Cuisine labeled restaurants, which are committed to sustainability and the ones bearing the Gostilna Slovenije label, which highlights local and authentic offerings. Last but not least, we encourage them also to discover Slovenia's Unique Experiences. Congratulations to all the recipients of the prestigious toques."
