The Poetovio Archaeological Park presents the heritage of ancient Ptuj, the largest Roman settlement on Slovenian soil. The new brand was created within the transnational project ArcheoDanube, where the municipality of Ptuj is lead partner.
The Poetovio Archaeological Park presents Roman archaeological remains of the ancient Roman town of Poetovio that have been found in Ptuj and its surroundings. The park features museum exhibits, and it also offers guided tours, tourist products and experiences, educational and interactive content, as well as events and exhibitions.
The project connects 15 partners from 11 countries (Slovenia, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Germany, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Austria, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia) and runs from 1 July 2020 to 31 December 2022.
The main objective of the project is to improve the heritage management, with a particular focus on archaeological parks in urban areas. Through plans, training, presentations, tools and small pilot activities, the project introduces new tourism initiatives (archaeo-tourism). The role of archaeological parks is twofold: on the one hand, they provide tools for individual communities to facilitate the management, control and protection of heritage resources, and on the other hand, they attract tourists and thus contribute to the development of urban archaeo-tourism. In the context of this project, archaeological parks are presented as an integral concept, as they contribute significantly to archaeological heritage/urban development and cultural tourism.
