Library Under the Treetops

An original outdoor reading project, intended for the general public, brings equipment and books each year to green corners of towns and cities, inviting people throughout the summer to read, browse, and relax under the trees.

The 21st edition of Library Under the Treetops is just around the corner, bringing free reading islands to 8 locations in Ljubljana and 13 other towns and cities across Slovenia and in neighbouring regions.

Each reading island has its own opening hours, schedule, and accompanying programme, depending on local capacity and funding. From the very beginning, the project has been made possible by numerous publishers who contribute the latest book releases of various formats each year.

On Friday, 6 June, the 21st edition will be celebrated with a guided cycling tour of the Library Under the Treetops locations and stories, led by Tina Popovič, who conceived the project 20 years ago, and Gaja Naja Rojec, the national project coordinator. The tour begins at 5 PM in Tivoli Park, by the boathouse (Čolnarna), and ends at 7 PM in Kodeljevo Park, where the gathering continues with a picnic and music.

This weekend, as soon as the sun comes out, the libraries in Ljubljana will open; others will follow in the coming weeks.

The libraries are set up in dry weather from the end of May to mid-September.
