The medieval town of Piran, with its Venetian architecture, is one of the most picturesque towns in Slovenia and was developed due to the salt trade. In the past, in the beginning of summer entire families moved to saltpans. They lived in stone houses, built beside the salt basins. Salt workers’ wives took good care of their husbands and provided them meals during their work. When walking around the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park, a romantic scenery is just breath-taking.

»I am happy when my family visits me in the saltpans and I think it is important to pass on the knowledge and tradition of Piran salt making to our grandchildren. What would we do without it?« says the salt worker Osman. He adds: »Petola is still the most important.« This special base, full of microorganisms enriches the salt with minerals and has been used since the 14th century when the salt makers from the Croatian island Pag brought it to Piran. Petola is the secret of Piran‘s salt. It makes it the whitest and purest salt in Europe.

On average, the saltplant season lasts from the first half of June to the middle of September, but the salt workers take care of their basins during the whole year. »You have to love this job, otherwise you would not endure the sun«, says Osman with a smile. Enjoy salty pleasures together with sweet delights and savour traditional flavours accompanied by fish, olive oil and wine.

In addition to salt making, Thalasso therapy has a long healing tradition, too. It includes treatments with natural products, such as salt, fango mud, brine, algae and seawater. Salt baths are ideal for relaxation, refreshment and well-being. Nature Park‘s beauties and the saltplant microclimate have a magical effect on you.

When the day ends, salt workers proudly put their tools aside. A walk throughg the basins fills them with a deep sense of satisfaction.
