Franco Basaglia Beyond Borders: Practices of Freedom

On November 12 and 13, 2025, an international symposium entitled Franco Basaglia Beyond Borders: Practices of Freedom will be held.

Franco Basaglia (1924–1980) began his journey to change institutional culture in Gorizia right on the (iron) border. He transcended and crossed the boundaries between normal and abnormal, reason and madness, but also between institutions and the environment, community, science and art, professions and disciplines, social services and healthcare, and generations. Today, as we cross borders (GO! Borderless), these boundaries still need to be crossed.

Basalian thought asserts madness as a legitimate part of human existence, as a social and cultural phenomenon. The Basalian approach creates a culture that opposes exclusion and introduces inclusive exchanges. It challenges the culture of expertise, changing it and questioning traditional professional approaches, while focusing on creativity and community involvement, teamwork, and the collaboration of different groups and actors.
