Rock'n'Roll of flavours

Maribor’s mix of good food, wine and music.

Slovenia unique experience

Culinary excesses of Maribor

What songs would the top wines of Styria sing if they were bottled rock stars? And what does Maribor's rock fan top chef listen to? Experience the heady combination of flavours and music on a real rock'n'roll tour. Maribor, which was already the rebel capital of rock in the 1960s, is sure to be rediscovered in a new light. On plates, in glasses and in the heart, where the good old rock music hits.

Discover the rocker soul of Maribor cuisine

Rock´n´roll of flavours are orchestrated by Maribor chefs and musicians. Through fine wines and flavours, you will discover music from the days when Maribor was the capital of Slovenian rock'n'roll.  With sparkling wine from the oldest vine in the world, we will play a rock song that every Slovenian knows for an aperitif. Maribor's first barista will serve you afrobeat, while the interactive digital table at Maribor Castle will serve you pheasant pie that even glam rockers wouldn't resist. In the pleasure wine bar, where 70 varieties of top local wines are hidden, meet a boutique winemaker who hears a new rock album in every vintage of his wine. Before the grand finale, a visit to the creative hub of alternative art and we're ready for the most rock-like experience yet. The independent and wild master of cuisine will take you through a spicy performance in a kitchen set in the 21st century.

Did you know?

The more than 450-year-old vine from Lent in Maribor is registered in the Guinness Book of World Records. Its descendants grow in front of the Paris Wine Museum, in the Vatican Gardens, at Prague Castle and next to the European Parliament.

Orange wine is made from white varieties, but the wine has a longer maceration period, ranging from a few days to a few months. It is this longer maceration that gives the wine its orange or – some would say – amber colour.

Exploring the digital interactive table at the Maribor Regional Museum gives visitors an insight into the changes that have taken place on and behind the table, shows attitudes towards food and wine in different periods, and shows the development of tableware and cutlery.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Maribor experienced the rock'n'roll boom. As many as 250 beat bands were active in the city at the same time, and at that time Maribor enjoyed a status similar to that of Liverpool in the UK.
