Kamnik is a medieval town with two castles, a monastery and a colourful street lined with artisan workshops. The town is inextricably linked with the Velika Planina plateau and its shepherding tradition. It is only a few minutes away from the largest Slovenian arboretum and the Terme Snovik spa, the spa nearest to the capital.

I regard it as an immense privilege to live in Kamnik. This city embodies foreigners’ fantasies of what Alpine life could be.

Green facts

Slovenia is writing its green story. Feel it at every turn.

Velika Planina is one of the rare preserved Alpine herding settlements in Europe, where herders take their cattle every year.

The healing resort at Tunjice features a spring of living water, which has been scientifically studied and tested. Living water maintains optimum energy in your body.

A little over 26% of Kamnik’s surface is protected under Natura 2000.

The trnič cheese from Velika Planina is protected as intangible cultural heritage.

Trnič cheese

Trnič is a type of pear-shaped hard cheese made of cottage cheese, cream and salt, embellished with special ornaments. Shepherds made trnič mostly in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Each shepherd had his own pattern, a small wooden board with carvings, which he used to decorate the cheese. The gift of trnič was intended to delight the girls of Kamnik who were in love. Today, you can use trnič to treat your nearest and dearest. Make a delicious ice cream with trnič.
