It Smells Like Mushrooms

Spend an unforgettable mushroom/culinary day during which you will learn all about mushroom picking while on a guided hike through the forests of Bovec, and then prepare delicious mushroom-based dishes in the kitchen.

Slovenia unique experience
A group of five people walk through a lush forest, holding wicker baskets.

Mushroom picking experience in the Bovec forests and Bovška Kuhn'ca

Bojan and Anja are a father and daughter from Bovec who can tell you many interesting things about mushrooms. Both are mushroom identifiers, and Bojan even holds the highest title at the Mycological Association of Slovenia - an identifier mentor. So when you go to the forest to pick mushrooms, they are definitely the right company.

Before you embark on an adventure into the mushroom kingdom of the Bovec forests, you will head to the terrace of Bovška Kuhn'ca (Bovec Kitch’n) to be served a delicious home-made breakfast made from local ingredients - giving you enough energy for a few hours of hiking through the forest as you look for and learn about mushrooms.

Return to Bovška Kuhn'ca with a basket of freshly picked edible mushrooms, and learn how to clean, prepare and store them. After that, create your own mushroom-based dishes under the watchful eye of the hosts, and then taste them.

How the experience unfolds:

  • Meeting Bojan and Anja and enjoying a breakfast of local delicacies

  • Foraging for mushrooms in the local forests and learning about them with a mycologist

  • Return to Bovška Kuhn'ca, a snack, and preparations for cooking

  • Preparing and tasting mushroom-based dishes

Did you know?

More than 3,000 species of fungi grow in Slovenia, of which several hundred are macroscopic mushrooms, i.e. those that can be seen with the naked eye. Only about 500 species are edible.

The diversity of its forests (beech, spruce, mixed forests) makes Slovenia one of the most suitable areas for mushrooms to thrive.

Fungi are a special type of organism, more similar to animals than plants, as their cell walls are made of chitin, which is characteristic of insects.

A mushroom is a forest fruit that grows above ground. The mycelium is hidden in the soil or wood on which it grows. The entire organism, consisting of the mushroom ("fruit") and the mycelium, is called a fungus.
