Visiting photographer Pelikan

Step back in time and embark on a unique journey through photographic heritage – from the late 19th century to the present day – within the authentic setting of the Pelikan Photo House.

Sejalec Slovenia unique experience
A vintage-style photo shoot with a man adjusting an old-fashioned camera and a woman in elegant attire posing confidently.

A taste of nostalgia in an authentic 19th-century photography studio

Visit the Pelikan Photo House in the heart of Celje for a unique journey through the world of photography from the late 19th century to the present day. Upon arrival, you’ll be greeted by master photographer Josip Pelikan himself, dressed in authentic early-20th-century attire. Together with a guide, he’ll take you on a tour of his bourgeois home and studio, where you’ll be enchanted by the iconic glass atelier, original photographic equipment, darkrooms and period interiors.

Just like in the old days, master Pelikan will position you in front of a backdrop for portrait photography, surround you with authentic furniture and invite you to dress up in early-20th-century clothing. Using a vintage camera, he’ll capture a one-of-a-kind photograph in the style of our grandparents.  Next, he will guide you to the Pelikan’s family living quarters, where the interiors, scent and portrait photographs evoke the spirit of the era in which the master photographer lived and worked. Over a cup of tea or coffee, you can enjoy a warm, homely atmosphere steeped in nostalgia.

Stroll through the photographs in the Božena Gallery’s temporary exhibitions and conclude your visit with a glass of sparkling wine and a delicious Celje pastry roll.

How the experience unfolds:

  • Welcome greeting by Josip Pelikan, accompanied by a curator/guide, in the garden of the Pelikan Photo House

Did you know?

A special feature of the Pelikan Photo House is its glass photography studio, the only preserved example of cultural and technical heritage of its kind in Slovenia and a rarity even in the wider European context.

Josip Pelikan is celebrated as one of the most important Slovenian portrait photographers and chroniclers of the 20th century. After his passing, his youngest daughter Božena continued the family’s century-old photographic tradition, working in the same studio until the end of the 20th century.

The Pelikan collection also includes glass-plate photography, a technique invented in the mid-19th century by Janez Puhar, a photographer from Kranj.

Among the items on display in the house is Pelikan's bicycle, which he once rode through the streets of Celje. He was even granted the rare privilege of cycling through the city centre, where riding was otherwise prohibited.
