A sweet honey experience

Discover the century-old tradition of female beekeepers in the Stankovič family's Honey Garden. Under the guidance of skilled female beekeepers, meet the queen bee without protective gear, relax in an apitherapy hive and savour golden honey treats.

Slovenia unique experience
Two women smiling in front of a wooden apiary with colorful accents. One wears a grey polo and sunglasses, the other a floral shirt.

Bees and wellbeing go hand in hand

Meet the Stankovič family, whose beekeeping tradition dates back more than a century and has been passed down through the female line. Your journey begins at the Hiša Fink restaurant. From there, a scenic walking path alongside the Krka River will take you to the Honey Garden Homestead. In this idyllic setting, you'll discover how the knowledge and passion for beekeeping has been passed down through generations of female beekeepers. For the Stankovič family, beekeeping is about more than just producing honey. It's an immersive experience that they want to share with every visitor. Here, you can safely encounter the queen bee without protective gear, touch natural honeycombs and breathe in the healing air directly from the hives, all while enjoying views of the surrounding greenery through the apiary window. In this charming corner of the town's forest, you will be treated to a variety of honey delicacies, including gold medal-winning honey biscuits with pollen, golden mead and homemade herbal iced tea. Beekeepers Andreja and Tjaša will share the story of their family's unique legacy with you, revealing how women have preserved and nurtured this beautiful craft for generations.

The course of the experience:

  • A warm welcome from the young beekeeper and apitherapist, Tjaša, accompanied by a honey tasting session.

  • A guided tour of the homestead and its herbal-honey garden with Andreja, a biologist and beekeeper. Their garden is home to more than 100 honey-bearing plants. Learn about the uses of these plants, from skincare products such as hydrosols, tinctures, ointments to herbal blends, spreads, drinks and jams.

  • A visit to the apitherapy beehive, where you can peek inside the hive and witness the secret life of bees. You will be able to observe life inside the hive, including watching the queen lay eggs, young bees hatch, worker bees bring in pollen and perform intricate dances, and honey gatherers and cleaners go about their work.

  • A relaxation session involving lying on the hives or in a hammock while breathing in bee aerosols and listening to the soothing hum of bees – a true bee meditation experience.

  • A honey feast with homestead honey-based delicacies and beverages, as well as a honey cake.

  • A creative workshop where you can melt beeswax over a fire to make your own scented candle or pendant.

A picnic scene under a tree with three people sitting at a wooden table. One person is serving food.

Their apiary features a special glass observation wall that allows children and adults to safely watch the bee colony at work.

The Carniolan honeybee is Slovenia's native breed and is admired worldwide for its calm temperament, industrious nature, high productivity and excellent orientation. With these unique characteristics, it is recognised and valued all over the world.

World Bee Day is celebrated on 20 May and was initiated by Slovenia in honour of Anton Janša, the Slovenian pioneer of modern beekeeping who was born on this day in 1734 and became the first beekeeping teacher in Vienna.
