The wild Soča Valley through the lens

Join an experienced hunter on a photo hunt in the wilderness of the Soča Valley and get to know the rare wild animals found in the kingdom of the Goldhorn.

Slovenia unique experience

Discover the wilderness of the Soča Valley with your camera

The Soča Valley itself, with its wild beauty, offers exceptional photo opportunities. Legend has it that the Goldhorn once roamed the mountains of the Julian Alps. Although you won't come across it anymore, its kingdom is home to many other interesting species.

Together with an experienced hunting warden, you’ll walk along the migration routes of chamois, Alpine ibex, red deer, marmots, wild cats and other wild fauna, looking for their tracks. The experience is an exercise in silence, as you have to tread very carefully along the roots of the forest paths to avoid disturbing the sensitive wildlife habitat. If you're lucky, you'll catch the red deer rut in September, the roe deer mating call in August, a wild boar on a feeding ground or a black grouse in its natural habitat.

Course of the experience:

  • Welcoming the participants with locally roasted coffee/homemade tea and a snack (crispy frika omelette made with Tolminc cheese).
  • Expert guidance from an experienced hunter.
  • Transfer to and from the start of the photo hunt.
  • Tracking wild fauna.
  • Local snacks from your backpack and a dinner of wild game.

Did you know?

The red deer rut bellow, the mating call of the red deer stag, is considered nature's most magnificent greeting. Red deer, the largest of the ungulate species and can weigh up to 250 kg, breed once per year and the rut can last for up to three weeks in September.

The European wildcat living in Slovenian forests is a highly solitary and territorial cat. It is considered rare and endangered, and has been protected in Slovenia since 1993. It has inhabited European soil for at least 300,000 years, and is most easily spotted in the cooler months, when it likes to find a sunny spot to lounge.

The largest forest grouse in Slovenia is the wood grouse, which is an endangered species. This shy bird is seen during the mating season from late March to mid-May, when it courts females by singing and dancing in the early morning hours.

The Alpine ibex is considered a true rock-climbing virtuoso because of its exceptional climbing abilities. These incredible mountain acrobats are very beneficial for the preservation of the mountain habitat, as they limit the growth of vegetation by feeding on it and enrich the poor high-mountain soil with their droppings.
