Break your Bela krajina flatbread with friends

Learn how to bake Slovenia's most famous flatbread in the company of locals.

Slovenia unique experience

A flatbread baking workshop that builds new friendships

Become a master at making traditional Bela krajina flatbread through an enjoyable bit of socialising with the locals. You won’t forget its distinctive taste, enriched with caraway and coarse salt, a centuries-old symbol of welcome.

Under the watchful eye of connoisseurs, you’ll make a flatbread with a recognised traditional origin and take it home with you. While the flatbread is baking, you will taste the typical wines of the Bela krajina region and local delicacies. You will explore the charming medieval squares of Metlika and get to know the most important buildings in this historic town. When you return, you will taste the flatbread just like the locals. Traditionally, the delicacy is brought to the table while still warm, and eaters break it square by square with their hands.

The experience is surely one of the most authentic ways to meet the locals, learn about their history and daily life, and pick up a new cooking skill in the process. You will enter as a guest and leave as a friend!

How the experience unfolds:

  • Welcome on the ground floor of Hiša dobrot Bele krajine (Bela krajina House of Delicacies) with a glass of local sparkling wine and a small snack.
  • Presentation of the Bela krajina flatbread workshop.
  • Going to the kitchen to ready ingredients for baking. Participants are given aprons and chef's hats and are assigned to work stations.
  • Under expert guidance, the flatbread dough is kneaded and left to rise.
  • While waiting for the dough to rise, you’ll feast on traditional Bela krajina wines and seasonal delicacies (cheese, salami, walnuts).
  • Return to the kitchen to shape the flatbread for baking.
  • A walk through the old town of Metlika.
  • Tasting and evaluating the baked flatbread.

Did you know?

The experience takes place in Hiša dobrot Bele krajine, which nurtures a special respect for folk traditions, as it brings together more than 70 providers of food and handicraft products from the area.

The guides are certified for making Bela krajina flatbread, which has a protected recipe and is considered a traditional speciality of the region. Bela krajina flatbread is one of the Slovenian products protected at the EU level.

This delicacy, whose taste and aroma bear a close resemblance to freshly baked white bread, was brought to Bela krajina by the Uskoks, when they settled high on the slopes of the Gorjanci Hills in the 15th and 16th centuries, fleeing from the Turks. Some later moved further down to villages, bringing their knowledge of flatbread with them.

Bela krajina flatbread is at its best and most appreciated every third weekend in May, when the members of the Peasant Women's Association bake it from morning to night at Vinska vigred, Metlika's three-day celebration of wine and cuisine.
