Rowing with Olympic rowers on Lake Bled

Accompanied by top athletes, complete the most scenic rowing course in the world.

Slovenia unique experience

Feel like an Olympian on Lake Bled

Test yourself in rowing, the legendary discipline that boasts one of the oldest traditions in the world of sport. Your guides will be top athletes and Olympic rowers and you’ll be rowing in professional racing shells. With the experience, you’ll gain a priceless insight behind the scenes of top sports crews.

While rowing, you’ll be able to admire Bled Castle which, together with the island in the middle of the lake, forms one of the most iconic images of Slovenia, and learn the basics of rowing techniques along the way as easy as anything. Surrounded by Olympic athletes, you’ll actually experience the meaning of “being in the same boat” and realise how important it is to “row in the same direction”.

The course of the experience:

  • Assembly at the Rowing Centre Bled in Mala Zaka, presentation of the Bled rowing story and viewing of the Centre. Breakfast on the lakefront is optional.
  • Changing in dressing rooms and formation of crews.
  • Land training on simulators to learn basic rowing movements and team coordination. The goal is to reach 15 coordinated strokes.
  • Carrying of the 17-metre long boat to the jetties.
  • Start of rowing. Firstly, safely by the jetties, then in pairs, in fours and finally rowing of the entire crew. The participants row in the usual direction from the Rowing Centre in Mala Zaka to Bled, then past the island to the Zaka finish area, before returning to the jetties through the middle of the lake.
  • The rowing regatta is the final test of team spirit and acquired knowledge. It covers 250 metres. Some 30 coordinated strokes must be done in about a minute.
  • After completion, the boats and equipment must be carried back to the boathouse. The last team wipes and cleans the boats.
  • Presentation of medals for the best teams on the Alley of Bled Olympians.
  • Banquet on the rowing grandstands with a lodge and a terrace overlooking the majestic Lake Bled.

Did you know?

All the participants receive commemorative medals in the shape of an oar. The medals are made by a Bled carpenter, a former rowing Olympian, from actual, obsolete wooden oars.

One of the rowing guides is Jani Klemenčič, the recipient of the first Olympic medal in independent Slovenia, who’s also a level 2 sommelier.

The length of Lake Bled is just right for a rowing course, being 2,000 metres long. The length of the lake between the centre of Bled and Zaka is some 2,200 metres, which accommodates a start and a finish area.

So far, Bled has hosted four world rowing championships, two European championships, three world veteran championships, a European rowing junior championship and a world rowing junior championship, and a number of other important international rowing regattas.
