Creative handicraft workshops

Ljubljana is still home to master artisans who practise crafts that many people thought were extinct. These crafts are part of the cultural heritage, still present and alive in the city centre.

Slovenia unique experience

Learn almost forgotten handicraft skills

Learn about the authentic, local and sustainable stories of the capital in handicraft workshops led by experienced craftspeople. You will visit the studios of traditional craftspeople still in business, who are closely linked to Ljubljana's history and culture, and transform yourself into a true artisan at the workshops. You can visit five Ljubljana craftspeople: the only umbrella maker in Ljubljana, a weaver, a printer, the only goldsmith and silversmith in Slovenia, and a potter. They will present their profession and you will learn the oldest of the traditional crafts in Slovenia. By visiting, you help to share and preserve traditions and local knowledge.

Did you know?

Archaeological excavations in Slovenia indicate that weaving was already practised by pile-dwellers, who lived in the Ljubljana Marshes, with various interruptions, from the fifth to the second millennium BC. You can find out more about ancient crafts at the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum, where weaving and pottery workshops are also held.

The first printing house in Slovenia was opened in Ljubljana in 1575 by Janez Mandelc, who was the first in Slovenia to print publications in the Slovenian language. The first book printed in Ljubljana was Dalmatin's translation of the Book of Sirach, part of the Old Testament Apocrypha.

Apart from the only umbrella-making workshop in Ljubljana, there is just one other such workshop in Slovenia, in Kranj. Umbrella-making is a very rare profession in the world, practised only in a few cities. For this reason the only umbrella maker in Ljubljana receives orders from all over the world.

Goldsmiths were most numerous in Ljubljana in the first half of the 17th century. After that, their number declined. Christoph Steidl Porenta is the only goldsmith and silversmith in Slovenia, having acquired his skills at a Benedictine abbey in Würzburg. His unique jewellery, vessels, goblets and sculptures are made exclusively from recycled gold, silver, diamonds and brilliant cut diamonds.
