A festival for every village
The saying “a festival for every village” is a joke that has a pinch of truth to it. Slovenians love tradition and socialising, so an ideal event for them is combines both. Discover special Slovenian features and find various festivals. Festivals focus on wine, beer, or cuisine, shopping, lace, the mischief of Pippi Longstocking, or wearing scary masks – whatever it may be, these festivals always combine socialising and cultural activities.
Did you know that Slovenians have liked to put on masks to chase away winter for centuries? There's something pagan about these people, you may think. There's some truth to this. Rituals for chasing away winter and evil spirits are old, probably as old as humanity itself. Today, these are preserved by ancient indigenous characters, such as škoromati in Hrušica pri Kozini, Brkini, and the surrounding areas, and by the kurent in Ptuj. However, ideas for a fun Shrovetide festival can be found virtually anywhere in Slovenia.
In August, head to Ptuj, where you can visit the Days of Poetry and Wine, and enjoy a combination of verses by renowned poets, good wine, concerts, and various events in one of the oldest towns in Slovenia. In September, head to the karst cave of Vilenica, which is considered to be the oldest tourist cave in Europe, and listen to the best poets, authors, playwrights, and essayists, mostly from Central Europe. At the beginning of the year, go to Ljubljana to visit the Fabula World Literature Festival featuring lively discussions about literature and current topics.
In September, the largest family festival, Pippi Longstocking, brings various artists and virtuosos to Velenje and they create a magical world for you, your children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, in which you can also actively participate. Traditional international children's festivals also include the Mini Summer Festival in Ljubljana, where your children can enjoy theatre and puppet shows, which are performed without speech.
Would you like to learn dance steps that are carried on from generation to generation? Would you like to celebrate life and the birth of new seasons that bring growth and abundance? Come to Bela Krajina in June, the landscape of white birches, flax, the slow-flowing River Kolpa, good wine, and culinary delicacies. In Črnomelj, the largest town in Bela Krajina, Jurjevanje, the oldest folklore festival in Slovenia, has been taking place since 1964.
Idrija Lace Festival
Do you like lace? Why not make your own? Come to Idrija, where lace has been made since 1696. This special festival features lace masterpieces and it also provides an entertainment programme and tours of various attractions. Here, you can taste traditional dishes and enjoy some coffee or cake with sugar lace. Take part in lace-bobbing workshops – perhaps you can master Idrija lace.
Beer, flowers, sweets, and chocolate
The Beer and Flowers Festival, which attracts tens of thousands of people to Laško in July, is proud of its tradition, which has lasted more than half a century. Here, you can taste beer and have fun listening to the sounds of various musical rhythms, experience exhibitions, and enjoy displays of the customs and traditions of the countryside. In September, those of you with a sweet tooth will be able to enjoy the Sweet Istria culinary festival. In April, satisfy your sweet cravings by visiting the Chocolate Festival in Radovljica. Various chocolate shops, restaurants, and sweetshops prepare delicious chocolate dishes.
Slovenian Wine Festival and Culinary Festival
Are you a lover of good wine? Red, white, rosé, sparkling, biodynamic, organic, iced? Slovenia is a land of no less than nine wine-growing regions. In November, you can visit the Slovenian Wine Festival and learn everything in one location, try some great wine, and learn how to combine wine and food. Also taking place at the same time is the Culinary Festival, in which creative Slovenian chefs introduce their own dishes, marrying the traditional and the modern.
Festival of Shopping and Fun
In addition to visiting the attractive Ljubljana city centre, you can also visit BTC City, which is one of the largest business, shopping, recreational, wellness, and entertainment centres in Europe. It is especially enjoyable in May and October, when a special Festival of Shopping and Fun takes place. You can enjoy a diverse dance and sports programme as well as shopping that can last long into the night. Various discounts and special offers are available.
