Top running events in Slovenia
Ready? Steady... Go!
Slovenians love to run and every year there are more and more people who engage in recreational running. Running is unique relaxation in nature, which brings a range of benefits for general well-being. In addition, running is becoming more and more a type of socialising, as many recreational running events are not only competitive in character, but also social with a series of accompanying events and activities. So, no matter what kind of challenge you set or how passionate your commitment to running is – it's time to put on your running shoes and head to the start of any of the running events, of which there are plenty in Slovenia. To make the decision easier, here we highlight some of the biggest and most attractive ones.

Ljubljana Marathon
Feel the streets, squares and paths of the Slovenian capital under your running shoes. Breathe with more than 20,000 participants of the biggest running event in Slovenia. Follow the rhythm of your heart and beat the selected kilometres on the way to the finish line at the Kongresni trg square. Regardless of whether you accept the challenge for the longest 42 km run or run shorter distances, in the end you will be rewarded with inner satisfaction, pleasant socialising with participants of the run and entertainment.
If you want to combine activity and an admiration for the beauty of nature, then you must definitely attend the Soča Outdoor Festival, which takes place in the Soča Valley at the end of June. The running pace is dictated by the sound of the emerald Soča river, your pulse is accelerated by the ascents to the panoramic tops, the encouragement of the locals and spectators along the track gives lightness to your legs, and a wonderful environment with hidden pearls, such as the Tolmin gorges, provides you with unforgettable memories. At the end, crossing the Tolminka river will provide you with some refreshment.
Take part in the heartiest marathon in Slovenia. Each year, the Three Hearts Marathon in Radenci connects the heartbeats of runners and hikers from different parts of the world. The longest, 42-km-long course crosses the Slovenian-Austrian border several times, thus connecting the neighbouring countries. Those who are not in the best running form can join Nordic walking and the Three Hearts March, while the Squirrel Run and Little Hearts Run are available for children.
Get to know the world of Karst with your running shoes at the Little Karst Marathon, which takes place at the end of March and signifies a kind of beginning of the season of major running events in Slovenia. You can opt for a circular 21 km track, which, among other places, takes you from Sežana to Lipica, and also crosses the state border with Italy. On a shorter 10 km track, KARST 10, you run through the Living Museum of the Karst.
It's easier when you have company. This could be said for a unique running event in the Slovenian capital, which is part of the May events on the Path along the Barbed Wire. The speciality of this run is that three runners – men, women or a mixed team – run together and in the end the result of the last one in the team that crosses the finish line is what counts. An excellent test of one's own will and power, and team spirit at the same time.
Did you know that the first recreational marathon in Slovenia took place in Bovec? Today's Bovec marathon is regarded as one of the most beautiful running trials, because the route of the marathon runs along one of the most beautiful European rivers, the Soča river, and is surrounded with a view of the mighty Alpine peaks. Cheering fans who warmly encourage all competitors help these kilometres to be run more easily.
Night runs throughout Slovenia have a really special charm. One of the most attractive and best visited ones is the 10k Night Run in Bled, which takes place in early July. Running under the stars around the idyllic Lake Bled is an unforgettable experience, which besides competitive spirit is filled with a lot of good will and relaxed energy.
What would you say to running along the shore with the sounds of the sea waves and the smell of salt and pine trees? If you are tempted, then come to the Istrian marathon in April, which takes you through charming coastal towns. On the longest, 42 km course, you will run along the entire Slovenian coast!
Experience Novo Mesto and the River Krka from a runner's perspective. This autumn, join the Novo Mesto Half Marathon or the recreational 6.5 km run. If you're not into running, you can join the Nordic Walk along the River Krka, a hike through the gentle hills around Novo Mesto, or run with dogs at Canicross. All routes will lead you through the incredible surrounding area of Novo Mesto, where you can see some sights along the way. A just a little hint – this is also harvest time. Perhaps you can join the exciting atmosphere in vineyards.
Do you like testing the limits of your abilities? Are you ready for the most challenging running trials? Then do not miss some of the most attractive tests of ones' will and power. Just get ready for them!
