Active Autumn in Slovenia: Ideas for Hiking, Cycling and Other Experiences

Let yourself be captivated by the colourful hues of autumn and explore nature actively at your own pace. Discover ideas for autumn hikes, cycling trips, horse riding, and underground and adrenaline-filled experiences.

Autumn’s here... What of it? The active don’t mind what season it is!

And this is certainly true in Slovenia. You will always find activities to fill your free time. And autumn is no exception. Quite the opposite. The countless shades of colour in nature, more pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds make autumn even more attractive for anyone who enjoys being active outdoors. Even a cloudy, rainy day can be turned into an active adventure by exploring the world beneath the Earth’s surface. You may have to take a few more items of clothing than in the summer, but you will be rewarded with stunning colourful images and the fertile scents of autumn. So put on your hiking boots, hop on your bike or saddle up your horse and head out into the autumn nature! You might feel like an autumn adrenaline rush, too.

Where can you go for an autumn hike?

When bathed in sunshine, autumn is ideal for hikers, as the temperatures are not so high anymore but still pleasant enough for a hike. The best hiking experiences await you in the hills and lower mountains, where you can enjoy the splendour of the colours. For spectacular autumn views, head, for example, to Mount Slivnica, Mount Slavnik or Cerje, or to the Lovrenška Lakes on the Pohorje Hills. You may find edible mushrooms or chestnuts along the forest paths or catch the scent of ripe produce if you meander through the vineyards and fields.

You can still venture into the high mountains in autumn, provided conditions and your level of fitness allow it, although you should bear in mind that the days are shorter, many mountain huts are already closed, and you may encounter snow in some areas. Before setting off, be sure to check the weather forecast, trail conditions and which mountain huts are open, and plan to return before dark.

Autumn cycling: where to go

Autumn is certainly not yet the moment to put your bike away. In fact, this is an excellent time to ride across and explore Slovenia. In some areas, temperatures are still pleasant enough to enjoy cycling even in late autumn. Cycling is particularly rewarding in Slovenia’s wine-growing regions, where you can also soak up the cheerful atmosphere surrounding the new wine harvest. For an autumn cycling trip, find inspiration in the Vipava Valley, Goriška Brda, Slovenian Istria, Bela Krajina, Posavje and Pomurje. When choosing your route, take the cycling surface, distance and elevation gain into account.

Of course, when on a cycling journey, stop off at friendly hosts and farms, where the locals will be happy to help you recharge your batteries with a good bite or sip made with fresh ingredients, of which there is no shortage in the autumn.

Horseback riding through the autumn landscape

Why not experience the magic of autumn from the saddle? The best horse-related experiences await you in Lipica, home of the elegant Lipizzaner.  Here, experienced riders can book a guided horseback ride through the Karst landscape, which glows red with autumn sumac. If you are less confident on horseback, you can enjoy a carriage ride instead. If Lipica is the cradle of the Lipizzaner, Ljutomer is the centre of harness racing, and it is by no means out of the question that you’ll come across a harness race when you visit Prlekija. Horse riding opportunities can also be found on many farms and ranches.

Lipica – the cradle of the Lipizzaner horse

One of Slovenia’s greatest attractions is undoubtedly the Lipica Stud Farm, home of the Lipizzaner horse, which has been operating since 1580. The traditions of Lipizzaner breeding, with the horses named after Lipica itself, are inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. You can admire the elegance of the Lipizzaners during performances and classical riding training sessions, explore the Karst by carriage, or join a guided trail ride for experienced riders.

Peek into the mysterious world beneath the Earth’s surface!

You can turn rainy days into a unique adventure below the surface of the Earth. Discover the mysterious Slovenian underground, which is especially stunning in the Karst. Here you will find the famous Postojna Cave, which you can visit aboard its unique cave train or step into the shoes of the first cave explorers. In addition to Postojna Cave, you will find a number of other caves well worth visiting. And it is not just caves that you can explore. Former mine tunnels can also offer active and even adrenaline-filled experiences.

Join guided exploration tours and underground adrenaline experiences that offer something different from conventional sightseeing tours. But remember to check the dates, difficulty level and participation requirements before your visit.
