Save money but still enjoy comfort
Hostels used to be considered low-cost accommodation for travellers. Today hostels have a completely different reputation that is comparable to that of hotels of the same category. A more affordable price does not mean that you have to give up comfort. Some hostels, including in Slovenia, exceed expectations and, with their stories and design, appeal to more demanding travellers. Hostels welcome every generation under their roof – from young people and families to the elderly. They are the right choice for anyone who likes to socialise and meet new people. Below are some of the best Slovenian hostels worth staying in.
Hostels that write special stories
Get to know Slovenian hostels that stand out for their special stories. These include formers prisons, urban camping and the first disability friendly hostel in Slovenia.
Bearlog, Kočevje
At the centre of Kočevje, in a renovated house with a rich history, you can explore the secrets of the Kočevje forest. Rooms at the Bearlog hostel are named after the trees and animals that are found in the Kočevje region, and there are also plenty of tracks of the king of the Kočevje forests – the brown bear. You will find its tracks in works of art and on your bed linen.
A night behind bars is not necessarily a bad idea. If you stay at Hostel Celica near the Metelkova art quarter, you will find that even former prison cells can be quite cosy. Every prison cell is a work of art, and the food is nothing like prison food. From here, you can just wander around Ljubljana or mingle with world travellers.
Experience the charm of Karst life in a typical Karst farmhouse converted into a modern hostel. The hostel organises a guided tour of the Slamčeva homestead, introducing you to Karst architecture and the peculiarities of rural life. In the evening hours, you can sit on a hay "sofa" and enjoy the scent of lavender and the view of the starry night sky.
Hostel Ars Viva is the first accessible hostel in Slovenia that is fully adjusted for people with disabilities. The well-kept and accessible rooms breathe the surrounding Lož landscape and offer a cosy shelter for everyone. The hostel also has an artistic side – it houses works by a range of artists.
Just a short distance from the centre of Ljubljana, you will find an eco oasis in a hostel offering an eco-friendly urban glamping adventure with a range of alternative accommodation options. Here you can relax in your cabin log, outdoor rooftop tent or sleeping capsule. You can have plenty of privacy, but still enjoy a social atmosphere.
The Koroška landscape is rich in forests and timber. This was a guiding principle for the creators of the Punkl Youth Hostel, who designed Slovenia's first low-energy hostel in line with the natural and bioclimatic characteristics of its surroundings. The rooms are named after the gastronomic specialities of Ravne and the Koroška region. The hostel is an excellent starting point for active adventures in its surroundings.
The Slovenian capital is the city of dragons. One of them took refuge in a modern hostel in the city centre, where he found his dream home. Why not join him? Find your cosy den in a room where you can relax. And if you are brave enough, you can sit on a dragon's tail in the communal areas.
What about putting something most valuable – yourself – in a vault? Do not worry, this is not a crime movie, but a modern hostel in the centre of Ljubljana where the rooms are designed as vaults. At the hostel, you will enjoy a high level of comfort and will truly feel like a priceless treasure.
Novo mesto is known as the town of situlae. You will not only find them in a museum, but also at a hostel in the centre of the town. The drawings of situlae, which decorate the corridors, rooms and bed linen, take guests back to the Early Iron Age, a period that significantly marked Novo mesto and the Dolenjska region. This also impressed the world-famous travel guide Lonely Planet, which years ago proclaimed the Hostel Situla the most beautiful hostel in Slovenia.
Wherever you go in Slovenia, you will find neatly furnished hostels. Most of them are in Slovenia's capital Ljubljana, but you can also find comfortable accommodation at affordable prices elsewhere.

A break in the world of vineyards and healing waters
Many youth centres in the towns of Thermal Pannonian Slovenia turn parts of their premises over to travellers to rest. And you'll find cosy and comfortable independent hostels there as well.
