Slovenian destinations writing the most inspiring green stories of 2025

Eight Slovenian destinations have earned a place on the Green Destinations Top 100 Stories 2025 list, recognised for their green stories.

Green stories that inspire globally

As the world's first green destination, Slovenia also writes inspiring green stories at the local level. This is reflected each year in the inclusion of Slovenian destinations on the global Green Destinations Top 100 Stories list. In 2025, eight destinations that truly live and breathe sustainability made it onto this list. Read on to find out which projects most inspired the global community and marked decisive steps towards a form of tourism that builds bridges between people, respects nature and creates opportunities for a more sustainable and connected world.

Bela krajina: Running towards a waste-free future

If you enjoy trail running, you might want to join the Lahinja Trail running event in Bela krajina. You can choose from three routes – 10, 18 or 30 kilometres long – which lead you through the picturesque Bela krajina landscape. But this is not just another running event. What makes it truly special is its strong commitment to sustainability, as it is considered the first Zero Waste event of its kind in Slovenia. Moreover, it takes place outside the main tourist season, in November, helping to protect the area's precious biodiversity.

Ljubljana: Ljubljana Tourism Week

Ljubljana is full of stories and experiences worth discovering. Many people, including locals, are unaware of all the hidden corners and activities that give the Slovenian capital its charm. That is why every year around World Tourism Day on 27 September, Ljubljana organises Ljubljana Tourism Week, which encourages residents through various activities to explore the city's rich cultural, culinary and creative offerings and see their city through the eyes of visitors. This approach brings tourism products and services closer to locals while also strengthening their sense of belonging to the city.

Bohinj: From farm to fork – 100% local

Bohinj, the first Slovenian destination to earn the platinum Slovenia Green label, has for many years preserved the stunning nature and rich tradition it inherited from its ancestors. Preserving Bohinj's rural idyll is also reflected in its cuisine. Characteristic flavours and fresh local ingredients find their way onto plates in many restaurants and inns throughout the valley. Through the project From Farm to Fork, they further promote connections between local producers, restaurants, markets and consumers, thereby strengthening the local economy and encouraging self-sufficiency and short supply chains.

Bled: Beyond the postcard image – a multimedia journey into authentic experiences

Bled is one of the greatest gems of Slovenian tourism. However, it is more than just an image of paradise nestled among alpine peaks. It is a place of unforgettable experiences that will stay with you forever. To highlight this side of Bled – the tourist gem of the Gorenjska region – a multimedia project was launched, bringing together three key elements: the promotional film Adventure of a Lifetime, The Bled Podcast and the book Bledology. The comprehensive, authentic and in-depth story of Bled, told through these three media, encourages visitors to truly experience Bled, explore it, and discover local experiences and products under the Bled Local Selection brand.

Miren Kras: Flavours of Love – a month of asparagus and cherries

In Slovenia, we like to say that the way to someone's heart is through their stomach. Close friendships are also forged around a table full of good food. The story of the Miren Kras and Brda destinations revolves around asparagus from the Goriška garden and cherries from Brda, resulting in the Flavours of Love. In addition to the two flagship ingredients of the destinations, the month of wine and food in late spring gives you the opportunity to sample top-quality wines from three wine-growing regions – Brda, Kras and the Vipava Valley. The highlight of the project was the gala dinner: 9 chefs – 9 dishes – 9 of the best wines from the 3 wine-growing regions, selected by renowned sommeliers.

The Logar Valley and the Solčava region A wool story of community, tradition and sustainability

The Solčava region is home to one of the indigenous sheep breeds, the Jezersko-Solčava sheep, which is adapted to the steep mountain slopes of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. In the Solčava region and the Logar Valley, people are proud of their sheep farming tradition, which has greatly influenced the lives of the local inhabitants. You can best experience this at the traditional Bicka sheep wool festival. The festival combines a fair of local products, demonstrations of shepherding and handicraft skills, creative workshops and a cultural programme. In the Solčava region, there are also three wool-processing studios, which serve as educational and creative centres.

Jeruzalem: Celebration of St Martin's Day: embracing tradition and sustainability

Do you know when the most joyful time of year is in Slovenia's wine-growing regions?  During the harvest season, when songs and joy spread through the vineyards, and on St Martin's Day, when young must turns into wine.  Numerous St Martin's Day celebrations take place during this holiday, which is celebrated on 11 November. There's no better place to experience them than in the homeland of wine. One such St Martin's Day celebration worth visiting takes place in Ormož, the heart of the idyllic wine-growing hills of Jeruzalem. Although the main focus is on the young wine, the event offers an authentic experience of the destination, a varied programme and sustainable logistics.
