Everyone get on a bike! It is as simple as that.

Ah, if only more people knew how many birds you can kill with one stone if you grab the handlebars of a bicycle instead of a steering wheel. The only pollution is your deep breath, there is hardly any noise, except for the bell ringing, you can park (nearly) anywhere, not to mention the positive effect of outdoor exercise on our body and mind. Slovenia is taking decisive steps to accommodate cyclists by building cycling infrastructure for both commuting and cycling holidays in the countryside. Many cycling routes are part of European long-distance connections. In short, Slovenia is becoming an increasingly popular cycling destination.

Travelling by train is a special experience

You can travel around Slovenia aboard modern single- or double-decker electric trains. They are quieter, faster, more comfortable and equipped with AC and open-access Internet, adapted for people with reduced mobility and fitted with a passenger information system that can also be used by persons who are blind, partially sighted and hard of hearing. They have larger bicycle capacities – each train can fit up to 10 bicycles! A train and bicycle combination is a means of travel that brings together macro- and micro-mobility in an environmentally.

Why are trains such a good choice?

If you are still unsure about train travel, perhaps you would be convinced by some interesting data that further emphasises the green role of rail transport.

77% of Slovenian trains run on electricity, and the entire rail transport system accounts for only 1 percent of Slovenia’s energy consumption in the transport sector.

With the same energy consumption, a train covers a distance 3.8 times longer than a truck.

The transportation of one tonne of cargo by rail generates approximately eight times less particulate emissions and 27 times less CO2 emissions per kilometre.

From Bohinj to the Soča Valley on a motorail train

You can take a special motorail train along the "Bohinj track", which connects two picturesque Alpine valleys in the Julian Alps. A ride on this train is a unique experience. As you travel from Bohinjska Bistrica to Most na Soči, you can enjoy the wild mountainous landscape of the Bača Valley from the comfort of your car and experience a ride through the longest Slovenian railway tunnel.

Park and Ride!

The Park and Ride (P+R) system is an efficient way to encourage sustainable mobility, promoting more high-quality and flexible passenger transport. The parking area on the outskirts of the city is the connection point where you can park your vehicle and take a city bus to the centre or use a bike rental service that usually operates close to parking areas. The system is increasingly being introduced in Slovenian towns and tourist destinations. Here are two examples of this sustainable means of transport.

Instead of a car – use an app!

Did you know that on average a car is parked for 95% of its lifetime? There is a solution: the Avant2Go electric car-rental or car-sharing system has been operating in Slovenia since 2006. When you need an electric car, you simply use the app to make a reservation and collect it from the nearest parking spot. If one is not available there, it can be delivered to your door. The system currently covers the five biggest Slovenian cities (Ljubljana, Maribor, Kranj, Novo mesto and Murska Sobota) and the Ljubljana international airport.

Charging stations for electric cars are everywhere

Travel distances in Slovenia are not large, even to the country’s most remote areas, and modern electric vehicles can reach them without needing to recharge. If you want to get to know Slovenia better, it is recommended to do shorter, 50- to 100-kilometer daily trips and climb a nearby hill, take a walk around a lake, or pamper yourself at a spa. You do not need to worry about getting stranded on the road with an empty battery. EV charging stations in Slovenia can be found nearly everywhere – at petrol stations, in city centres, at shopping centres, in parking garages and at accommodation providers that like to keep up with the times.

Use the app to find a charging station

In order to find the nearest charging station, we recommend that you use PlugShare or Gremo na elektriko, an app by a Slovenian provider that, in addition to searching for a charging point, you can also use to pay for the power consumed.

The Pečjak family, pioneers in electric vehicles

Did you know that there is a family in Slovenia who have been driving on electricity since 2006 and even beat Tesla’s Roadster with their home-built car at a 2013 rally? The Pečjak family are certainly revolutionaries when it comes to electric vehicles. In 2014, Andrej and Jasna Pečjak took their modified Metron 7 car on a record 736-kilometer drive from Bled to Dubrovnik, the longest distance in the world covered by an electric car at the time. A year later, the pair made improvements to beat their record, driving 824 kilometres at an average speed of 72 km/h in Germany!
