Holidays in Slovenia

Slovenia is an excellent choice for your Christmas and New Year’s holidays. You can spend your holidays enjoying unforgettable experiences on snow, pamper yourself at spas and explore the diversity of a country where in an hour or two you can go from the Alps to the seaside, or from the Pannonian hills and flatlands to the capital in Ljubljana. You can count down to the New Year with other revellers on the streets of Slovenian towns and cities, where pleasant company, culinary delights and a wide range of musical styles will see you through to midnight.

Counting down to the New Year in the capital and its surroundings

On New Year’s Eve, Ljubljana turns into a playground for all ages and tastes. On the capital's main squares, where the biggest New Year’s Eve celebration in Slovenia takes place, you can enjoy diverse musical performances by Slovenian artists. No matter where you decide to celebrate New Year's Eve, the magnificent fireworks display from Ljubljana Castle at midnight is always worth watching. You can spend New Year's Eve in the square under the castle in the centre of Škofja Loka. Fairy-Tale Kamnik will easily charm you to bid farewell to the old year in its Main Square. The Main Square in Novo Mesto will pulse with a cheerful atmosphere. Kočevje, where you can stroll through a Winter Fairy-Tale Forest, invites visitors to celebrate New Year's Eve in the town centre.

Enjoy the charm of New Year’s Eve in the mountains

Celebrate the New Year with the idyllic backdrop of snow-covered mountains of Alpine Slovenia. One of the largest New Year’s celebrations in Slovenia is held in Maribor, where the outdoor New Year’s celebrations with the longest tradition in Slovenia are held in Slovenia’s largest square – Leon Štukelj Square (Trg Leona Štuklja). Counting down to the New Year in the centre of  Kranj accompanied by music will put you in awe with falling confetti instead of midnight fireworks. Celebrating New Year's Eve in romantic old Radovljica centre is a very special experience.

Top off your winter fairy-tale with outdoor New Year’s celebrations in Bled, where you will be able to enjoy the sounds of Alpine ethno-pop music and a magnificent fireworks display over the lake at midnight. In nearby Bohinj you can ring in the New Year to the sounds of the Sašo Avsenik Ensemble, led by the nephew of the legendary Slavko Avsenik. Outdoor New Year’s celebrations with the idyllic backdrop of snow-capped mountains can be experienced in Kranjska Gora or Bovec, where the Bovec Outdoor Film Festival (BOFF) also takes place at the end of December.

Take a leap into the New Year with the scent of the Mediterranean

Treat yourself to a unique experience on the longest night of the year and ring in the New Year on the Slovenian coast. A large outdoor New Year’s celebration will be held in Koper, with a magical fireworks display at midnight. Modern swing rhythms will take you to the New Year on Tartini Square in Piran, where the New Year’s Jump into the Sea event is organised on the first day of the New Year. Nova Gorica will host several concerts in the last week of 2018, with the finale on New Year’s Eve. Before entering the New Year, visit the magical world of the live Nativity scenes in Postojna Cave.

Celebrate New Year’s Eve amidst vineyards and thermal springs

In Celje, where a Fairytale Land comes to life in December, you can leap into the New Year at Krek Square. Celebrating the New Year at City Square in Ptuj, the oldest Slovenian town, will be marked by the 1950th anniversary of the first mention of Ptuj. You can also experience a joyful New Year's Eve celebration in the centre of Murska Sobota. Throughout December the Magical Snowflakes in Laško will guide you to a lovely programme of festive events leading up to the New Year's Eve ball.

New Year’s celebrations for children

Children, too, look forward to the coming of the New Year, but it is usually difficult for them to stay awake until the stroke of midnight. With this in mind, there are special New Year's celebrations for children held throughout Slovenia. Every year, Bled offers the biggest event of this kind and this year children, too, will be able to dance to the music and enjoy the company of cartoon characters. Ljubljana puts on one of the biggest New Year's celebrations for children where they will meet their fairy-tale heroes and listen to children’s vocal performances. Before dark, children in Celje will be able to visit exciting New Year's celebration organised in the Fairy-Tale Land. Ptuj will offer entertainment to the youngest visitors in the morning of the last day of the year. In Koper children will be able to celebrate New Year one day earlier. Father Frost and his entourage will visit all those places and make children's hearts beat a little faster.

Through magical December to the New Year

Visiting the plentiful December festivities in Slovenian towns and cities will see you through to the longest night of the year.
