Hunting for the most beautiful autumn colours!
Are you one of those people who just loves a beautiful blend of autumn colours? If your answer is yes, here are some tips on where to go on foot or by bike to admire the autumn beauty. Some of the trails and viewpoints along the way are especially worth visiting in autumn, and even those who aren't already 'fans' of autumn will be delighted by the magical scenes.
Slemenova špica hill
You can go to Slemenova Špica hill from the Vršič mountain pass, while fitter hikers among us can reach it from the Tamar Valley. Although the trail is not difficult, you will need suitable hiking shoes and equipment. Along the way, you will be enchanted by Alpine meadows with golden larch trees. The small lakes that are formed after the rains reflect the mighty surrounding peaks of the Julian Alps – Jalovec, Mojstrovka and Ponce. The perfect autumnal mountain symphony!
Slivnica offers a picturesque view of the intermittent Cerknica Lake on one side and Snežnik on the other. You can climb it from a number of different starting points. Although Slivnica is popular with both hikers and cyclists all year round, it has a special charm in autumn. Legend has it that witches and their mistress Uršula choose Mount Slivnica as their home. They supposedly brewed up their potions, rain and storms in the cave beneath the peak. Maybe you'll run into them around Halloween, when they have their own feast day.
In autumn, the Karst edge comes to life in the fiery colours of the smoke bush (known as ruj in Slovenian). In its 20-kilometre stretch, it offers sumptuous views of the colourful landscape of the Karst and Istria, connecting charming villages that, despite their apparent modesty, have plenty to show off. One of the most beautiful views is from the top of Slavnik and, if the weather allows, you can see the Adriatic Sea, the Julian Alps and even the Dolomites.
The panoramic viewpoint of the Cerje hill is one of the stops on the long-distance Walk of Peace trail. At its peak, 342 meters above sea level, stands a Monument of Peace that connects the past and present and reminds us of the futility of war. Cerje overlooks a breath-taking view of the Vipava Valley, the Gulf of Trieste, the Friuli Plain and the Brda Hills. In mid-autumn, these views are especially picturesque, as they are adorned by the fiery colours of the smoke bush. You may decide to take a pleasant autumn hike from Trstelj to Cerje.
The Kolovrat ridge offers spectacular views of the Julian Alps, the emerald Soca River, the Friulian Plain and the Adriatic Sea in every season, including autumn. There is an open-air museum with remnants of the Isonzo Front battles that raged in the area during World War I. Kolovrat is part of the long-distance Walk of Peace trail.
If you are looking for the most photogenic spot in Bled, you will find it on a hill on the southern side of Lake Bled. From Ojstrica, you can admire the amazing scenery of the lake with the island, Bled Castle and the peaks of the Karavanke mountains in the background. In autumn, Bled and its surroundings are clad in warm colour shades, sometimes covered with mysterious mists that add to the charm of this spectacular view.
The viewpoint Peč nad Staro Fužino opens a view of all the vastness and beauty of Lake Bohinj and the surrounding peaks of the Julian Alps. It will not take you much time or energy to reach the viewpoint, but you will certainly be rewarded with a magnificent scene featuring a palette of beautiful autumn colours. If you wish, you can extend your tour to the top of Rudnica.
Jamnik is one of the most stunning viewpoints in Alpine Slovenia and therefore a popular photographic destination. Although the village on the slopes of the Jelovica plateau can be reached by car, there are also hiking trails leading to Jamnik. One option is the trail leading from the iron-forging village of Kropa, while from the other side of the ridge you can reach Jamnik from Nemilje.
Anyone whose heart is drawn to wander among the vineyards in autumn will be delighted to visit Jeruzalem. The hills with their terraced vineyards, where the traditional wind-rattles turn in the wind in autumn, and the mixed forests with their colourful fall cloak, are a wonderful motif for photography. If you want to enjoy this beautiful blend of autumn colours and cheerful atmosphere in vineyards and wine cellars, you can walk the Jerusalem Wine Trail.
The heart-shaped road amidst the vineyards of Svečinske gorice has won many hearts. In autumn, when the vineyards turn into the shades of yellow, orange and red, the sight of Špičnik makes the heart flutter even more. Špičnik is popular with cyclists, but you can also walk to the heart of the vineyards.
If you want to enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the autumn-coloured Maribor and its surroundings, climb Piramida. The vine-covered lookout point is a favourite spot for locals and visitors alike, where you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city, if only for a moment. It only takes half an hour to get there, but if you want to extend your escape to nature a little further, continue the walk along the ridge to the west.
The hiking trail to Nanos is the most popular trail in the Vipava Valley. You can climb Nanos to enjoy the spectacular views of the sea on one side and the Alps on the other by choosing one of several hiking trails of various difficulty levels. If you are one of the fitter hikers, you can reach the top of Nanos from Razdrto, otherwise we recommend taking an easier route.
The Solčava panoramic road, with its magnificent views of the mighty peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and beautiful valleys that have retained their authenticity, delights hikers and cyclists all year round. Autumn, with its colours, also has its charm. Subsistence farms will offer you rest and delicious dishes created in harmony with nature. Whichever of the three panoramic road tours you choose, you will enjoy every step of the way.
Did you know that you can find Heaven (Nebesa) in the Dolenjska region? That's the name of the lookout point from where you can enjoy a truly heavenly view of the rounded hills of Dolenjska, dotted with vineyards. These have a special charm in autumn, which is the happiest time of the year for wine growers. Nebesa is part of the Steklas Hiking Trail. Near its peak, you will also find an excursion farm of the same name, where you can recharge your batteries. Oh, and you can get to Nebesa by bike.
A walk to the Lovrenc Lakes is definitely one of the must do's when at Rogla. The hiking trail amidst pine trees, lakes and wooden paths will enchant you, as it has many who have captured on camera all this beauty of the Pohorje forests. The Lovren Lakes are also worth a visit in autumn, when nature shows its amazing colours.
The Vinarium Observation Tower offers a magnificent view of four countries. In autumn, this image is even more colourful and therefore worthy of attention. Avid hikers will make their way to the tower up hill and down dale through the Lendava Gorice hills along the tourist Wine Trail. Along the way you will be enchanted by the colours of the vineyards, the tradition of wine culture, and authentic experiences, including culinary ones. The trail to Vinarium is also popular with cyclists. You can reach the tower from the direction of Dolga vas or, if you are a bit more daring, from Lendava.
Each season has its own charms that lure us out to enjoy nature. It is the magic of nature all year round that makes hiking Slovenia's most popular activity. See for yourself why this is true.

The beauty of Slovenia's mountains and hills draws many people out of the valleys and up to the heights. But not just to the heights! Those who do not enjoy hiking up mountains can opt for trails in the lowlands. In total, there are more than 10,000 kilometres of marked hiking trails in Slovenia. Along the trails, you can make a stop at shops and businesses offering services specially tailored to the needs of hikers.
Explore the diversity of the Slovenian landscape along the long distance trails that connect various parts of the country. These take you from the mountains to the seacoast, across hills and plains, and past Slovenia’s natural and cultural attractions. Most long distance trails are part of an international network of trails that connect several European countries. The longest trail that runs across Slovenian territory, as well as the oldest European long distance trail, is the Slovenian Alpine Trail.
A stroll through the vineyards is an unforgettable experience, especially in autumn, when the grapes ripen and the foliage takes on warm shades of orange, yellow and red. Many hiking trails in wine-growing areas are also wine roads, where you can make a stop at wineries and combine hiking with the experience of tasting wine and local delicacies.
Sunny autumn days, especially during an Indian summer, are perfect time to enjoy the outdoors. Pleasant temperatures and picturesque nature add to the charm of the activities.
