The Areh Plateau in the Pohorje Hills
In winter, the Pohorje Hills are a true haven for active experiences in the snow. The Mariborsko Pohorje Hills with the Areh Plateau are considered the largest Slovenian ski centre with the longest illuminated ski slope enabling night skiing. In addition to skiing, it’s also possible to hike from the Church of St Areh to Ruška Koča Mountain Hut where you can regain your strength with traditional Pohorje dishes.

Pokljuka
One of the most scenic winter postcards features the snow-clad Pokljuka Plateau. When hiking from Rudno Polje to Uskovnica or the Planina Zajamniki mountain pasture, you can enjoy a true winter fairytale among the snow-covered spruce trees. Shepherds’ huts gently nestle in the embrace of snow, while the majestic peaks of the Julian Alps, including towering Mt Triglav, provide a stunning backdrop.

Solčava
If you enjoy winter stillness and tranquillity, you should visit the idyllic Logar Valley and Solčavsko. Secluded farmsteads, sheltered in the midst of wild, yet beautiful mountain nature, radiate a sense of pleasant warmth and homeliness. Snow cover invites visitors to be active outdoors, either taking on cross-country skiing or hiking in the snowy landscape.

Kranj
The capital of Alpine Slovenia and the centre of the Gorenjska region is considered a town of culture, as the great Slovenian poet, France Prešeren, spent his last years there. Slovenian Culture Day, celebrated in wintertime on 8 February, pays homage to the poet’s memory. On the holiday, Kranj returns to the era of the poet, the first half of the 19th century, with Prešeren Fair and lively cultural events.

Ankaran
In winter, Ankaran exhibits its calmer side, mirroring Mediterranean poetry. A walk along the coast between pine trees and the sea provides views of the peaceful azure that serenely blends with the winter sky. The waves gently lap against the rocky shore as you breath in the softness of the sea air with its scent of salt. This is a perfect time to calm down and focus on yourself.

Predjama Castle
A blanket of snow adds to the fairytale image of the largest cave castle in the world. Exciting tales of the adventurous knight Erazem, who lived in Predjama Castle, continue to stir the imagination of visitors. If you visit the castle, don’t miss exploring Postojna Cave, where the temperature never drops below zero and where you’ll find breathtaking sculptures and other treasures of nature’s underground wonderland.

Brda
Nature and the people of the Brda Hills rest during the winter. And that’s a great holiday opportunity for everyone who prefers to stay out of the cold and enjoy peace and quiet. In comfortable and warm boutique accommodation facilities, you can thoroughly spoil your taste buds with supreme Brda wines and cuisine. While doing so, you can admire the snow-capped Alpine peaks far in the distance.

Piran

The Velika Planina Plateau paints an unforgettable winter fairytale postcard with its mountain backdrop and snow-covered shepherds’ huts blending with the whiteness of the landscape. It’s tempting enough to make you want to venture on a hike across the plateau on snowshoes or in winter hiking boots. Upon your return, you can get warm in the cosy shelter of one of the huts, with a cheerful blaze pleasantly crackling in the fireplace.

Kočevje
In winter, the mysteries of the vast Kočevsko forests are hidden under a thick layer of snow. At first glance, it seems that nature has sunk into a deep sleep, but if you look closely, you’ll find traces of life. The town of Kočevje also lies in this winter idyll, in which snow muffles sounds and embraces the surroundings in fairytale whiteness.

The Kolpa River, Bela krajina
Winter in Bela krajina is charming, too. The area along the Kolpa River is perfect for hiking and taking in the stunning winter landscape. Skiing enthusiasts can enjoy their favourite sport on the slopes of Slovenia’s southernmost ski resort in Gače. After you’ve relished all the beautiful sights of winter, you can explore the rich cultural heritage of Bela krajina and test your handicraft skills indoors.

In winter, the Vinarium Panoramic Tower soars above the tranquil landscape of Prekmurje and its snow-clad vineyards. Vines covered with soft snow make gentle patterns on the hills, while the views from the top of the tower extend far beyond the surrounding area, to Austria, Hungary and Croatia. On a cold clear day, the images are even more impressive and the view reaches even further.

Grad Goričko
Slovenia’s largest castle lies in the embrace of Goričko, the most north-eastern region of Slovenia. A walk through its 365 chambers reveals the history and natural heritage of this area, and gives an insight into the contemporary life and creativity of the Pomurje people. The castle also provides accommodation. When covered in snow, it looks even more magical.

Jeruzalem
The wine-producing region of Jeruzalem boasts images you can easily fall in love with in all seasons. Grapevines rest under a layer of snow in winter and draw magical swirls on hillsides. In addition to the beautiful winter landscape, friendly locals will offer you shelter in their wine cellars and further add to the cosy homeliness with selected Prlekija delicacies.

Rotunda, Prekmurje
A small round shrine in the village of Selo is one of the unusual architectural attractions of Prekmurje. According to legend, the Romanesque rotunda initially belonged to the Knights Templar. The entrance to the rotunda symbolically marks Christ’s arrival in Jerusalem. The rotunda is surrounded by a blossoming meadow in spring and summer, which turns into a gleaming white carpet in winter.
