Mountaineering Villages in Slovenia: experiencing the Alpine world authentically

Be inspired by the pristine beauty of mountaineering villages in Slovenia. Immerse yourself in the active experiences of mountainous countryside, taste local cuisine and discover cultural heritage.

What are Mountaineering Villages?

Have you ever longed for a break in an idyllic alpine village, where time stands still and you can enjoy authentic contact with alpine nature? We have a suggestion for you: visit the Mountaineering Villages in Slovenia.

The international Mountaineering Villages Network connects destinations that are located at the foot of mountains and have a rich mountaineering tradition due to their historical connection to those mountains. These villages focus on sustainable tourism development with an emphasis on mountain sports that do not require special infrastructure, such as mountaineering, hiking, mountain biking, ski touring, etc. There is also a strong emphasis on respecting the traditions and customs of the local population. Instead of large hotels, cable car systems, and other intrusive infrastructure facilities, you will find smaller boutique and family accommodations here.

Alpine Convention – a commitment to sustainable development in the Alpine region

The Alps are a precious and sensitive habitat that requires special care and responsibility. With the growing challenges of global warming, mass tourism, extensive construction of mountain roads, ski resorts, and other major infrastructure projects, there was a need for countries in the Alpine region to protect this area from excessive environmental impact and establish more sustainable guidelines. Eight Alpine countries have therefore signed an international treaty – the Alpine Convention – which commits the signatories to sustainable development: respecting and preserving the natural environment, local traditions and cultural landscapes, and limiting excessive environmental interventions. Mountaineering Villages are a concrete example of implementing the Alpine Convention in practice.

The Alpine valley is renowned for its healing climate, unique lake mineral waters, exceptional biodiversity and rich cultural heritage. A large part of the area belongs to the Natura 2000 network, in which glacial landscapes, numerous plant and animal species, and centuries-old homesteads intertwine.
