Experience idyllic winter in Slovenia
Our snow-covered landscape and its crystal whiteness invite you to rush right to it. The endless peace and quiet of the snow-capped hills and valleys invites you to relax and enjoy activities in nature. And once you freeze to your bones, find a pleasant shelter where you can daydream by a fire crackling in the fireplace. If we pair this with some pleasant company and delicious food to re-gain our strength, then this becomes a truly idyllic winter experience. The former Alpine skier Tina Maze, a multiple Olympic and world champion, enjoys winter tremendously. Would you like to know what she finds to be a perfect winter getaway?
Across snow-covered landscapes on cross-country skis
Slovenia is a true paradise for those who like an active holiday. If you want to find a sport or recreation that allows you to maintain your physical fitness, improve your health and well-being, and enjoy the beauty of the snow-covered nature, then cross-country skiing is ideal for you. Maintained cross-country trails can be found all over Slovenia. Tina Maze also likes to turn in her Alpine skis and exchange them for cross-country skis. She highlights Pokljuka as one of the most popular cross-country skiing destinations. There, you will experience a true winter wonderland in the midst of mighty spruce woods with an exceptional view of Slovenia’s highest peaks. A true abundance of maintained cross-country trails can also be found between Kranjska Gora and Rateče and beyond, all the way to the Planica Nordic Centre. Also visit Rogla and enjoy an authentic cross-country skiing experience.
A date with pristine whiteness and tranquillity in the midst of mountains
Do you, like Tina, ever wish to escape overcrowded ski slopes and find some peace and quiet in the mountains? This feeling of freedom and a perfect experience of nature can be enjoyed on touring skis. There are many ski touring trails and opportunities in Slovenia. In order to avoid the traps of the tempting pristine snow cover, we recommend that you enjoy your skiing adventure with a local guide. When deciding which tour you’d like to select, also pay attention to the weather and snow conditions, and make sure you have suitable equipment. One of the most beautiful tours on snow-capped mountains is the trail from the Komna plateau to Mt Krn, but it is only suitable for the most advanced ski touring enthusiasts. If you are hungry for a true adventure, then the only true multi-day ski tour in Slovenia – the Triglav Ski Touring Traverse – is just the thing for you.
When the cold and warmth go hand in hand
Snow brings us indescribable pleasure on the slopes and on hills, whether it be on skis, snowboards, sleighs, or in some other way. However, we can get chilled to the bone. This is why Tina Maze recommends that we upgrade our morning activities and enjoyment in the snow by visiting thermal pools, saunas, and going for a massage in the afternoon. In Slovenia, most ski resorts are only a few kilometres from the nearest spas, health resorts, and wellness centres where you can get warmed up and relax your muscles. Once you finish shredding the steep snowy slopes of the Pohorje Hills in Maribor, you can treat yourself to some pampering at the Terme Maribor Spa. Just a few kilometres from Ljubljana, you can visit the Krvavec ski resort. After you finish you snow activities there, you can head to the Terme Snovik Spa or complement your family fun in the snow by visiting the Atlantis Water Park. If you are skiing on Golte, you can also make a stop at the Terme Dobrna Spa.
In the pleasant shelter of mountain cabins
There is nothing more romantic than spending Christmas and New Year’s Eve or your winter holiday in a wonderful snow-covered mountain atmosphere. If you are among those who enjoy genuine contact with nature and the peaceful mountain environment, then staying in a mountain cabin is perfect for you. One of Tina’s favourite cabins is the Herdsmen's Cabin in Jezersko (Pastirska koča na Jezerskem, where time stands still and you can take in the mighty images of the surrounding Kamnik and Savinja Alps. Feel the divine beauty of the mountain world above the emerald River Soča and treat yourself to your own little piece of Heaven (Nebesa) above Kobarid. Idyllic life, far from the urban hustle and bustle, surrounded by a wonderful natural backdrop, awaits you near Mozirje, at the Korošec Tourist Farm, which is also suitable for a family holiday.
Winter in lively city streets
Streets illuminated with holiday lights, colourful stands, the aroma of warm drinks and local delicacies – all of these are a great reason why it is worth visiting Slovenian towns and cities in winter, especially during Advent. Feel the magical atmosphere that creates special feelings and warms your heart. Tina Maze would like to warmly recommend that you visit the heart of Slovenia, Ljubljana, where the holiday pulse of the city is especially felt. You can also experience the holiday spirit in Slovenia’s other towns and cities.
