The creative spirit at the Rog Centre

The modern creative Rog Centre welcomes everyone who wants to create. Tools, accessories and equipment for releasing creative energy are available in nine production workshops and labs. Thus you can attend a clay modelling workshop, sew new trousers in a textile lab, or use a 3D printer to print state-of-the-art jewellery.

The city that is home to the oldest grapevine in the world is also a very creative city, which you can discover at the pottery centre or private studios. In any case, it offers sufficient options and ideas on how to make something beautiful.

Pottery is one of the most widespread crafts in Slovenia. At the Maribor pottery centre, you can make your own cup, vase or any other clay product and decorate it in your own way.

In Maribor, you can also indulge your creative streak at the Esen Woodcraft Studio, where you can design your own wooden products. Master artisans will show you their knowledge and skills, and you can make anything according to their model – from a wooden spoon and jewellery to a kitchen cutting board.

The mission of Slovenska Bistrica’s Domestic and Artistic Crafts Centre is to preserve the cultural heritage and transfer knowledge about traditional crafts. They will be happy to show you how to make pottery and ceramic products from clay.

The handicraft town of Škofja Loka

Škofja Loka is one of the most recognisable craft and handicraft towns with a long tradition. The Domestic and Artistic Crafts Centre continues this tradition with its numerous workshops. There you will be shown and taught how to make the famous gingerbread pastry, how to work wood, metal, clay, glass, and paper, and you will also learn how to make wonderful felt products.

Ribnica, the cradle of woodenware

Masters of the craft can be found in Ribnica, whose woodenware has a centuries-long reputation. Woodenware is articles made of wood for domestic and farming use. But when calling at the Ribnica Handicraft Centre, one will quickly realises that it offers courses in other skills as well. There you can make your own basket, make clay products or write your name in calligraphy.

The mastery of lacemaking in Idrija

Idrija lace is certain to captivate you with its delicate elegance. But you can also learn how to make lace yourself. The Lacemaking School, which is famed for being the oldest continuously operating school of this kind in Europe, holds lacemaking workshops several times a year.

Pottery making in Filovci (Prekmurje)

In the past, every house in Filovci was home to potters. Today, this tradition is continued in Lončarska vas (Pottery Village). There you will be welcomed by the only family still preserving and passing on the tradition of pottery from the area surrounding Moravske Toplice. Visit the local pottery making museum, cimprače (traditional Pannonian houses made of wood, mud and straw) and see a pottery demonstration. If you call ahead to schedule your visit, you can create your own product using a pottery spindle. Besides making pottery, you can also try your hand at ceramic painting.

Handicraft workshops in Rogatec

You can also learn handicraft skills at the Rogatec Handicraft Centre at Strmol Manor. Follow the artisanal and handicraft traditions of the Obsotelje and Kozjansko areas and join a variety of workshops, such as glass-making, knitting, pottery making and ceramic painting, and a hand weaving and modern textile design workshop.

Honeybread heart making in Radovljica

Honeybread hearts were once given by young men as a token of love to their girlfriends. Get the experience of this traditional Slovenian handicraft in the old town of Radovljica. Visit the honeybread museum located in the cellar of the Lectar Inn. The beautiful honeydough works of art will entice you to make a honeybread heart according to a traditional recipe yourself and then decorate it in your own way.

Creativity Bela krajina style

Šokčev Dvor is a traditional homestead and a protected cultural site of Bela Krajina, as well as the right place to create products in the Bela krajina style by using traditional natural materials such as wool and linen. Weave a woolen bookmark, paint an Easter egg or make a woolen soap case.

Žoki knitting in Bohinj

Žoki is a term denoting hand-knitted woolen socks in Bohinj. It is a traditional product made from the sheared coats of local sheep. You can learn to knit a pair of such socks yourself in a workshop spanning two sessions for two hours each.

Mlin umetnin, Šentjur  

A renovated homestead near Šentjur with a more than 200-year-old water-powered mill now lives a new life. Although the mill wheel still turns, the homestead’s main focus is on a different wheel – the potter’s wheel. Here, in the company of skilled artisans, you can create your own charming pottery cup or jug. You can also explore a museum collection that takes you back to the time when the mill was fully operational.
