Castles of Posavje – magnificent stories of then and now

Posavje is the Slovenian land of castles. Listen to stories from the past, hidden between castle walls, and get to know the life of magnificent castles today.

Welcome to the Slovenian land of castles!

There are more than 150 castles and manors in Slovenia, scattered all around the country. Many have been eroded by the ravages of time, while some of them have been given another chance and today they live a new life – as museums, galleries and even hotels. Castles are the most common in Posavje, which is why this region is called the Slovenian land of castles. There are nine well preserved castles in the region, as well as some that are now only ruins, although these are also of interest due to their exciting past.

The magnificent castles tell stories of their own, which together make up a unique potpourri of cultural heritage experiences. Embark on a journey into the past and experience the charm of the present between the mighty walls of Posavje castles.

Castles from a fairy tale

The castles of Posavje dominate the landscape between the rivers of Mirna, Sava, Krka and Sotla. They have been part of our nation’s cultural heritage for more than a thousand years, telling stories about the lives of residents, intertwined with stories told by travellers who passed through. Get to know some of the best preserved castles in Posavje.
