The best stops on mountain trails

Slovenia is a country of enthusiastic mountaineers, thousands of whom take part in the annual selection of the best mountain huts. This accolade also refers to the cuisine and the hospitality provided by the hut’s caretaker team. The best Slovenian mountain huts are distinguished by their range of classic Slovenian stews such as goulash, jota (pork, sauerkraut and bean stew) and ričet (bean and barley stew), mushroom soup, minestrone and so on, and štruklji (a boiled strudel-like roll with various savoury or sweet fillings), strudels, žganci (a kind of crumbled polenta) and sausages. In some huts, guests are treated to štruklji, various strudels, pancakes, fried pastries called flancati and other sweet pick-me-ups to give them energy to continue their journey.

Recommendations for your hiking or cycling trip

Whether you’re heading for the high peaks or nearby hiking, forest, themed, educational and other trails, make sure you have the right snacks with you: water, energy, vitamin and mineral drinks, energy bars, or a sandwich. While resting at a mountain hut, take the opportunity to treat yourself to a hot meal! Eat even if you’re not hungry. You’ve lost energy on the way, so replenish it before you continue your journey. Take the rest of your supplies back to the valley with you! If you want to spend the night at a mountain hut, check the opening times beforehand and make a reservation.
