Launch of a new Instagram photo competition to mark this year's World Tourism Day

World Tourism Day is celebrated under the auspices of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) every 27 September. This year’s theme is "Tourism and the Digital Transformation". On this occasion, the Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board, Msc. Maja Pak, stressed that new technologies in Slovenian tourism help convey the vision of Slovenia as a boutique destination for five-star experiences. Also Slovenian Minister for Economic Development and Technology, Zdravko Počivalšek, agrees that tourism has been at the forefront of digital innovation. To mark this year's World Tourism Day, the Slovenian Tourist Board has launched an Instagram photo competition.

Thermal Pannonian Slovenia and the city of Maribor in the forefront of the campaign

Today, on the occasion of World Tourism Day, the Slovenian Tourist Board has launched an Instagram photo competition which encourages people to post and share their best photos from the region of Thermal Pannonian Slovenia and the city of Maribor by using #ifeelsLOVEnia hashtag. The aim of the project is to obtain attractive photographs and to draw attention to beautiful tourist spots in eastern Slovenia. An important detail about the contest is the fact that all the photos made in 2018 will be taken into account when selecting final winners. Furthermore, the Slovenian Tourist Board is continuing with its successful "Make new memories in Slovenia and share them with us" campaign. The second autumn/winter part of the national digital campaign started on 17 September and encourages social media users to share their experiences in eastern Slovenia.

How digital transformation effects tourism sector in Slovenia

World Tourism Day has been celebrated every year on 27 September already since 1980. Each year, a certain theme is selected and this year’s World Tourism Day topic is "Tourism and the Digital Transformation", which focuses on advances in digital technology.

Also in Slovenia, tourism, as a fast-growing and strategically important sector which contributes a notable share to the national GDP (12 % according to WTTC data), is undergoing significant changes due to rapid advancement in digitalisation. Slovenia has recently seen a great progress in the integration of digital technologies by enterprises, where it now ranks above EU average. The Ministry of Economic Development and Technology additionally contributed to this, by publishing public calls for tender for promoting the digitalisation of SMEs, particularly in tourism.

In his message, Minister for Economic Development and Technology Zdravko Počivalšek wrote, "Today, tourists want journeys tailored to their habits and preferences. The tourism sector is able to adapt to this situation through technology that enables the collection and analysis of data on tourists' experiences and preferences and the development of unique tourism products based thereon. We can see the impacts of virtual reality on cultural presentations at tourist destinations, which amount to new and interesting tourist experiences."

Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board Msc. Maja Pak meanwhile emphasised: “Revolution in the development of new technologies represents an exceptional opportunity to increase competitiveness in tourism. New technologies enable the development of more attractive experiences and new products. At the same time, they upgrade and personalize experiences, manage tourist flows, help achieve the goals of sustainable development, enable more efficient marketing and optimize the operation of tourism providers. Slovenia is one of the world's most vivid environments for start-ups and an important player in the field of block technology. Since block technology is definitely our future, I believe that by connecting new technologies and tourism, great solutions can be achieved. In doing so, technology must support, not overcome the content. At the Slovenian Tourist Board, a lot of attention is devoted to this field. Three years ago, we started with an intense digital transformation with the aim of more effective group targeting. Currently, a campaign entitled "Make new memories in Slovenia and share them with us" is taking place. It invites visitors to use hashtag #ifeelsLOVEnia and by doing so promote Slovenia’s hidden corners. Since World Tourism Day represents a perfect occasion for introducing new projects, a new Instagram photo competition, which encourages the users to share their best photos from the Thermal Pannonia Slovenia and Maribo, has been launched today. You are more than welcome to join the competition! On this occasion, I would also like to wish you all a happy World Tourism Day!”
