The Giro d’Italia Pays Tribute to Slovenia in the Year of Nova Gorica/Gorizia as European Capital of Culture

The Giro d’Italia Pays Tribute to Slovenia in the Year of Nova Gorica/Gorizia as European Capital of Culture

On May 24, the 14th stage of the Giro d’Italia will take riders from Treviso through Collio and Brda, culminating in a 13.8 km circuit that crosses the border, with the finish line at Nova Gorica/Gorizia, celebrating the unity of the two cities.

As Nova Gorica and Gorizia make history by becoming the first cross-border European Capital of Culture, the Giro d’Italia seizes the opportunity to celebrate Slovenia’s scenic roads. On May 24, the 14th stage of the race will take riders from Treviso through the beautiful Collio and Brda regions, ultimately culminating in a 13.8 km circuit that symbolically bridges the border between Italy and Slovenia. The finish line, which marks the heart of the two cities, will be at the iconic Nova Gorica/Gorizia, highlighting the unity of this unique cross-border partnership.

More about the Slovenian stage at the Giro D'Italia

This occasion will also see the Slovenian Tourist Board actively participating in the Giro-E, joining as a daily team for two key stages, including the one in Cesano Maderno (MB) on May 29th. Proudly donning its green jersey, the I Feel Slovenia team will ride the same roads just hours before the professional cyclists, underscoring Slovenia’s rich cycling culture and its vital role in this landmark edition of the Giro d’Italia.

Slovenian Champions and the Growing Presence in Italian Cycling

One fact speaks louder than any theory when it comes to the Slovenian Tourist Board's commitment to major cycling events in Italy: the last two winners of the Giro d’Italia were both Slovenian champions. Primož Roglič, a gold medalist from Tokyo, is racing again this year, while Tadej Pogačar – already one of the greatest cyclists in history at just 26 years old – claimed the Maglia Rosa in both the 2023 and 2024 editions.

Pogačar's achievements go beyond the Giro, with four consecutive victories at the prestigious Giro di Lombardia and two podium finishes at Milan–Sanremo, a race won in 2022 by another Slovenian, Matej Mohorič. These accomplishments underscore Slovenia’s deep and thriving connection with Italy’s legendary cycling roads.

Further enhancing this bond is the rare and symbolic joint appointment of Nova Gorica and Gorizia as European Capitals of Culture. The Giro d’Italia 2025 will pass through Collio and Brda on May 24, a date rich in history – marking 110 years since the momentous day when "the Piave murmured."

Stage 14: Treviso – Nova Gorica/Gorizia (May 24, 2025 – 186 km)

The stage will wind through Slovenia’s exceptional hills, beautifully adorned with vineyards, fruit orchards and olive groves, creating a picturesque backdrop for this exhilarating race. Cyclists will enter Slovenia at Plešivo, traversing the heart of Brda, passing through the charming villages of Medana, Dobrovo, Šmartno, Kojsko and Hum. The route will briefly return to Italy, echoing the 2021 edition, before finishing in the vibrant town of Nova Gorica.

Slovenia’s Sixth Appearance in the Giro d’Italia

This marks the sixth time that Slovenia will welcome the Giro d’Italia caravan, further solidifying Slovenia's deep connection with one of cycling’s most prestigious races. The last time the Giro ventured through Slovenia was in 2022, when the route passed through the picturesque town of Kobarid, before ascending the challenging Kolovrat and returning to Italy.

Slovenia at the Giro-E: Two Stages with the I Feel Slovenia Daily Team

Parallel to the Giro d’Italia, the Giro-E will make its return in 2025 – continuing as the only Grand Tour raced on electric pedal-assist bicycles, allowing participants to ride on the same iconic roads as the legendary Corsa Rosa. Organized by RCS Sport, the Giro-E gives cycling enthusiasts the chance to experience the same thrilling terrain as the champions, but with the added support of e-bikes. The 7th edition will feature 18 stages (excluding the three stages of the Grande Partenza in Albania), spanning from the sun-drenched landscapes of Puglia to the majestic Alps, and, of course, crossing into Nova Gorica and Slovenia.

The stage that finishes in Nova Gorica on May 24 will showcase the I Feel Slovenia team as a daily team, proudly donning green kits that mirror the vibrant emerald hues of the Soča River, which flows through both Gorizias. Their green jerseys will also evoke the spirit of Slovenia’s top cycling event – the Tour of Slovenia – whose prestigious Green Jersey symbolizes the race leader and will be contested this year from June 4–8.

This 49 km stage from Cormons (GO) to Nova Gorica is notably shorter than its Giro d’Italia counterpart, offering an exciting challenge for participants. It will be the first of two appearances for the I Feel Slovenia team in this year’s Giro-E, with their second race scheduled for May 29, covering 52 km from Biassono to Cesano Maderno.
