Slovenian and Portuguese Tourist Boards Forge Stronger Ties

The Slovenian Tourist Board and Turismo de Portugal have signed a letter of intent, reaffirming their commitment to fostering deeper bilateral cooperation. The agreement was signed by MSc. Maja Pak Olaj, Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board, and Carlos Sales Abade, President of Turismo de Portugal, as part of the official visit of the President of the Portuguese Republic to Slovenia.

Rooted in a shared vision of sustainable and forward-thinking tourism, the agreement sets the stage for stronger institutional ties, knowledge exchange and best-practice sharing. Key areas of cooperation will include sustainable tourism development, data-driven insights and the application of artificial intelligence in tourism.

“The signing of this letter of intent strengthens ties between two destinations that share core values—sustainability, quality and innovation. Collaborating with like-minded partners like Portugal enhances Slovenia’s position as a key player in the European and international tourism landscape. We firmly believe that this partnership will bring valuable benefits to both sides,” said MSc. Maja Pak Olaj at the signing ceremony.

The signing took place during the official visit of Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who is in Slovenia on March 18 and 19 at the invitation of Slovenian President Nataša Pirc Musar. He is accompanied by a business delegation, further underscoring the significance of bilateral relations between the two nations.

Tourism exchanges between Slovenia and Portugal have been growing steadily. In 2024, more than 16,500 Portuguese visitors explored Slovenia, contributing nearly 50,000 overnight stays—a 15% increase in arrivals and a 10% rise in overnight stays compared to the previous year. Ljubljana was the top destination, accounting for 40% of Portuguese overnight stays, followed by Maribor, Rogaška Slatina, Bled and Piran.

This new cooperation builds upon existing ties between the two countries within the European Travel Commission (ETC) and other international organizations.
