Gault&Millau Slovenia 2021 award winners revealed

Despite very turbulent times due to Covid-19 pandemic and consequently restricted opening times of the restaurants, the Gault&Millau inspectors managed to visit the restaurants and put together the list of the best for 2021. The Gault&Millau 2021 edition includes 153 restaurants, over 80 popular gathering places, 67 wine cellars with 198 estimated wine samples, 13 breweries and more than 30 typical Slovenian food products. The guide will soon be available for sale, but the best for 2021 were revealed in a very special way: through a video.

The Slovenian Tourist Board (STB), which pays special attention to gastronomy as one of Slovenians' most important tourism products, has been a key partner of the prestigious Gault & Millau Guide for Slovenia from the first edition on.

“Traditionally, also this year’s edition of the guide has been refreshed. Last year, new categories were added, including typical Slovenian food products – the selection of these has gotten even wider this year. Also, this edition will no longer reveal the best restaurant, but a selection of the best restaurants that have received 4 toques. This way, we have followed the practice of the Gault & Millau guides from around the world and put all the restaurants with 4 toques on a pedestal," says Mira Šemić, the director of Gault&Millau Slovenia, and continues: “I want to emphasize that four toques are a great recognition and that keeping them over the years reflects the high quality and excellence of the restaurant or the caterer”.

The winners announced online

This year's award ceremony was held in a different format, in accordance with the epidemiological situation. The winners were announced in a dynamic video, intertwined with the stories of the winners from the previous years. Awards and certificates for the winners would, later on, be sent by post. The show is still available for viewing on the Gault & Millau Slovenia website.

In the video ceremony Msc. Maja Pak, the Director of the Slovenian Tourist Board, which has been the main partner of the project since the very beginning, addressed the winners: “The Gault & Millau guide is a great recognition for Slovenian gastronomy. This year's announcement comes at a time when Slovenian tourism and the hospitality sector are facing a major crisis. But today is the time to be joyful and optimistic since we reward the best. In the last years, Slovenia has become one of the most desired gastronomic destinations. In this year, when Slovenia holds the title of the European Gastronomic Region in 2021 and the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism will be upgraded with the Slovenia Green Cusine Label, we will enhance the image of Slovenia as a world-renowned culinary destination even more, she concluded.
