The 72nd Neptune's Baptism, a maritime fest in Piran

Neptune’s baptism is a special event organized by the Secondary Marine School dating back from as early as 1947. It is a unique series of events that distinguishes Portorož and Piran from other places. It’s the time where youthful innocent fun meets culture. This year, the event takes place 7 – 9 September.

Neptune’s baptism is a special event organized by the Secondary Marine School. It usually takes place at the beginning of September, when a warm welcome is given to “freshers” - the first year students.

The ceremony was first performed as far back as in 1947. It was a spontaneous event organized by the students without the presence of teachers and other people. Gradually, it has turned into a traditional 3-day event which distinguishes Portorož and Piran from other places.

The highlight of the three days is the Maritime or Neptune's baptism, which symbolizes an initiation of 1st year maritime students under the patronage of Neptune, God of the sea. The weekend in Piran is dedicated to sea and maritime traditions and skills. During this time, Neptune, the god of the sea and his entourage take authority over Piran, baptise the new generation of seamen and hand over the power to them. Rich entertainment programme with music concerts and local culinary delights make the event even more interesting and worth visiting.

Activities of the event are co-funded by the MALA BARKA 2 project, which is co-funded by the Interreg Slovenia – Croatia programme.
