Postojna Cave celebrates the 200th anniversary

On 14 April 1818, the cave lamplighter, Luka Čeč discovered the most breath-taking parts of Postojna Cave and amazed by the natural beauties exclaimed: “This is a new world, this is a paradise”. And this is how the wonderful story of the Karst’s underground beauty, which to date welcomed more than 38 million visitors, began.

The 200-year history of organised cave tourism at Postojna Cave has written many exceptional stories. Many important politicians and celebrities visited the cave. In addition, a number of fun facts is connected with the cave: Did you, for example, know that Postojna cave was the first underground cave in the world to have a railway? And that this underground beauty was illuminated by electric lamps before Ljubljana and even before London? Or that the only underground post office in the world operates here? But none of these facts can beat the story of real living dragons that still call this cave their home – In racks of trays of water, scientists have placed specimens of one of the world’s strangest creatures: the blind aquatic salamander Proteus anguinus – or olm, as it is known locally.  In 2017, 21 baby olms were hatched and it was the first time in history that the hatching of proteus larvae took place in scientifically controlled environment. After one year, they are all healthy and this gives hope for saving olms for the future.

Postojna Cave represents a perfect opportunity for having fun and discovering breathtaking underground natural features. You will step into the world of dragons, knights and mysteries, while riding a unique electric train. Make sure to stop at Vivarium Proteus, where you can see some of the 150 animal species living in the cave. And once you get back to the surface new adventures with knights await you at Predjama Castle, the Guinness World Record Holder for the largest cave castle in world.

On 10 April, the press conference marking the reopening of the renovated exit platform in the Concert Hall and 200th anniversary of the cave will take place, held by the CEO of Postojna Cave, Marjan Batagelj.
