5 best photo spots in Slovenia by photographer Jošt Gantar

Once a month, we will present the list of top 5 photo locations in Slovenia, compiled by the most inspiring photographers we had a chance to work with. The first among them is Jošt Gantar, a renowned Slovenian photographer, whose work has been put on display at various important exhibitions around the globe, including the one held at the United Nations Palace in New York.

Jošt Gantar is a renowned Slovenian photographer, whose work has been put on display at various important exhibitions around the globe, including the one held at the United Nations Palace in New York. He has also worked closely with the Slovenian Tourist Board and provided a great number of photos for our media library.

By revealing his favourite photo spots in Slovenia, he has become the very first photographer in our brand new feature “Behind the lens”, which gives you an insight into Slovenia’s most photogenic locations. Each month, we will present the list of top 5 photo locations, compiled by the most inspiring photographers we had a chance to work with.

Bled – Osojnica

Osojnica offers one of the most beautiful views on Lake Bled and the wider Upper Carniola region. It is conveniently directed towards east and allows us to snap the intensive morning colours of the landscape. Or in autumn and winter the mist that sneaks over the lake. The mornings here are so varied that the place fascinates me every time I visit.

Sv. Tomaž Hill

This photo location is best described as „the typical Slovenian landscape in one swing“. View of the Kamnik Savinja Alps, where Grintovec and Kočna stand out, the hills of Škofja Loka and the church of Sv. Tomaž (St. Thomas) at the top of one of them. This is also a „morning“ location, since we look eastwards and can thus admire the mesmerizing colours of the sunrise. The situation with the morning fog in autumn and winter is also very interesting, as it often happens that only the church peeks out of the fog. However, the fog can quickly get too high and in this case, we are unable to see the church - but this adds on to the adrenaline every time I visit.

Peričnik Waterfall

Located in Vrata Valley, Peričnik Waterfall is one of the most diversified waterfalls I know. It consists of two bigger waterfalls and a beautiful brook that flows beneath them. The area around is also very diverse, offering lots of photo ops. The path also leads under the waterfall, which also gives you an interesting view and makes a great experience. The waterfall is beautiful in all seasons and throughout the whole day.

The valley of Seven Lakes (Dolina Sedmerih jezer)

Seven high-mountain lakes are located in the heart of Triglav National Park. My favourite one is Dvojno jezero Lake, where also the mountain hut is located. Even though you are in the valley, which sees no sun in the morning or in the evening, occasions for photography are numerous. The valley is beautiful when larch forest puts on its autumn colours. In winter, the lakes are hidden deep beneath the ice and snow and we can not spot them.

Logar Valley

This is not only a great starting point for hiking in the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, but also a great example of sustainability and natural heritage protection, which can be seen at well-kept remote farms. Photo ops are endless - either when you are entering the valley or when you view it from the panoramic road above Logar Valley.

All photos were taken by Jošt Gantar.
