Ljubljana is one of the most Bike-Friendly Cities in the World

Ljubljana first made it on to the list of top 20 bike-friendly cities in the world in 2015, taking 13th place, and this year it improved its ranking. It reached as high as 8th on the “Copenhagenize Bicycle Friendly Cities Index 2017”. You can explore the Slovenian capital with the BicikeLj automated bike sharing system, which is generating record amounts of usage. Just in May the system recorded almost 104,000 rentals.

Within the framework of the “Copenhagenize Bicycle Friendly Cities Index 2017”, 136 cities were evaluated based on 14 criteria, and a list of the top 20 bicycle friendly cities was generated. During Ljubljana’s assessment, the jury noted that the title “European Green Capital 2016” had further supported cycling in the city, that the proportion of cyclists had increased, and that the cycling infrastructure follows modern guidelines and good practice, making its expansion easier. The jury pointed out the positive promotion of cycling as a key element, and added that they see no reason why Ljubljana could not reach a 20% or even a 30% share of cyclists in the traffic in the coming years.

Green Ljubljana has around 230 kilometres of dedicated cycling trails. Since 2011, Ljubljana’s citizens and visitors have been able to hire bikes through the very popular self-service bike-sharing system BicikeLj. Bikes are particularly suitable for shorter rides, as there is no charge if you return the bicycle to the nearest docking station within an hour. There are currently 51 stations and 510 bikes, and they have seen more than 4 million journeys since it started operating. A record was set in May, when users used the system 4,880 times in one day!
